In Search of Sungudogo by Greg Laden.

Sometimes called the "fourth African ape," Sungudogo is not a Gorilla, not a Chimpanzee, not a Bonobo, and possibly not even real. Years ago, Sungudogo drew the interest of the world famous primatologist Dieter Phillips, who was funded by a secret society of "scholars and gentlemen" to launch an expedition to determine the veracity of this mysterious primate. Dieter never returned from that expedition, and as the years passed, the whole story drifted into obscurity. But the watchers were always watching, always waiting, for clues of the fate of this expedition. When new evidence came to light, the investigation was renewed into the outcome of Phillip's ill fated trek into the Rain Forest. Who better to follow Dieter Phillip's tracks than his former student, aided by an explorer and mercenary familiar with the area, assisted by two willing Congolese park guards? They were to learn things that went beyond their wildest imaginations, and they would discover secrets about Phillip's expedition, about the rift valley, about themselves, about humanity, that they would never be able to share but that would change their lives forever.

ERIC is trusted by most states as the most effective way to perform cross-state voter registration checks. This is important for cleaning voter rolls and ensuring election integrity.

Here's how ERIC works:

NEW from @janestreet -- Election officials say that while they're relieved the midterms went so smoothly, there's still an existential risk to democracy that makes them nervous for 2024: "We dodged a bullet, but the gun is still loaded" https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/elections/election-officials-say-democracy-still-risk-2024-rcna68308?cid=sm_npd_nn_tw_ma

An obscene act to censor @IlhanMN and her righteous critique of US foreign policy, and a further sign of the dismantling of US democracy by an authoritarian GOP.

By this authority, couldn’t the GOP remove every Democrat from every committee? Absurd. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/feb/02/house-republicans-vote-out-ilhan-omar-foreign-affairs-committee

Trying to INCREASE my level of subscription to @sciam. No way to do that on the site. Their cust. service sent me a useless email. I then tried to cancel, (to start over) and the web site won't allow me to cancel. I'll have to report any future autorenew as credit card fraud.

Damn proud to be a Minnesotan today. https://twitter.com/bbierschbach/status/1620491819841908743

Briana Bierschbach @bbierschbach

Gov. Tim Walz just signed the bill codifying abortion rights into law. It's effective immediately.

"The message that we're sending to Minnesota today is very clear: your rights are protected in this state."

On this day in 1861, Texas secedes from the United States. As lawmakers vote to join the Confederacy, an angry Governor Sam Houston storms out of the state house in disgust.

This is one of those accomplishments you get really excited about passing, then later, you think, "What? Did we have to fight for this totally obvious thing to do? Whoever didn't want this? Jeesh." (or words to that effect)
