It appears that there never will come a time when we should do anything about the massacre of children or mass killings in general, according to the Republican leader:

  1. What about the rights of the rest of us? What about the rights to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness which are continually threatened by putting the army’s most efficient small bore human-destroying weapon into the hands of every yahoo, idiot, and emotionally damaged and incompetent person who can pony up a few hundred dollars for an assault rifle? Assault rifles have to stop. Our very right to life is denied to many of us by politicians like Paul Ryan who are continually doing the bidding of the NRA. A pox on Ryan and on all the Republicans who support assault rifles without restriction. It is time to grow up and stop nurturing the stupid Tea Party adolescent fantasy that giving citizens ever increasing access to military weapons will make our government and our lives better. It is time to grow up and stop worshipping the second amendment. It is time to determine what our needs for weapons are. It is time to clarify that stupid obtuse ambiguous unclear amendment and repair or replace it. The constitution is not a damned religious document. It can be amended. Pandering to the hopes and prayers of wannabe Rambo’s at the expense of the very fabric of our society is a pathologically stupid set of behaviors that has to be stopped.

Ryan is pandering to the NRA and to gun lovers.

Gun lovers and the NRA are killing tens of thousands of themselves and others every year in the US.

We need to take back our country from the NRA and from gun lovers.

    1. I’m just a simple minded man seems to me the one constant in all mass shootings is the place in where it happens just take schools for instance the American government has a law that you cannot have a gun on school campuses Or any other federally funded facility why not let us carry we’re ever we won’t I passed and went threw gun training course as well as a federal background check I am a law abiding citizens so why limit me to stop something from happening on a gun free zone

    2. Jeez. Cmon anonymous. Think it through. THINK man. Or miss. Whatever you are.
For a place full of smarts, yanks have a shitload of non thinkers.
If you think going to schools with a gun in your pocket is rational ( and you have tried to rationalise it ), then you are fucking doomed and so is your country.
The idea you nong is not to have fuckwits walking around schools with guns.
Hows about people start taking big fuckoff machetes to kindie huh.
      Thats rational eh!
Tell ya what. I might just carry round a pail of fucking acid on the morning electric train. For self defence. And to protect those around me.

Whats wrong with the yank education system????

  2. Re Anonymous: “why limit me to stop something from happening on a gun free zone”

Oh, the good guy with a gun idea again. Well, (1) lots of killers pass for law-abiding citizens, your idea would just let them hang around schools more easily. (2) lots of armed people get killed too; cops and members of the military for example. (3) Killers seldom announce their intent in time for you to get your gun out. (4) Even trained people — cops and militarily can be and are killed before they can fire a shot. Surprise is everything. (5) A killer may decide your gun will save them the trouble of getting their own. Lot’s of guns get into killing hands by theft.

Under your plan, school zones would no longer be designated as “gun-free” zones and therefor no one could be intercepted and stopped before they actually shot someone. And with 30-round clips and automatic weapons it doesn’t take long before a lot of people are dead. That’s what those weapons are for — and the only thing they are for.

Think of another plane; that one won’t work and, in fact, will make things easier for killers.

  3. >never will come a time when we should do anything about the massacre of children or mass killings in general, according to the Republican leader

I believe Paul Ryan has tried to stop federal funding for Planned Parenthood.

    1. In which a rightwing arse pretends that a heinous attempt by authoritarian male conservatives to control women’s reproductive rights is equivalent to school shootings.

Sometimes, the vileness in here is almost too much to bear.

    2. “I believe Paul Ryan has tried to stop federal funding for Planned Parenthood.”

That has to do with the right’s love of punishing women, nothing to do with mass killings.

  4. This is what politicians bought by vested interest are paid to do, so seeing them do it isn’t surprising, just sickening. The mind-boggling part is that at least some ordinary people actually defend this shit day in, day out, on the internet. Instead of denouncing this blatant corruption of democracy for what is so obviously is.

    1. BBD, if you’d like to denounce blatant corruption of democracy, what was your take on the FBI using false information to obtain a warrant in the FISA court to spy on Carter Page and the GOP POTUS candidacy? How do you see 30,000 emails being shielded from public view?

Does your conviction motivate any denunciation of rigging the Dem primary race? Or are Republicans to blame for Bernie being cut down?

As for Paul Ryan, he’s a weasel’s weasel. Not a leader of anything positive. Much like Hastert, Gingrich and many before him.

Any teenager can go buy a gallon of gasoline or a tank of propane gas. Who is ready to regulate all of that?

    2. In which a rightwing arse, cornered by the truth, resorts to whataboutism.

Pathetic and vile in equal measure.

    3. ” if you’d like to denounce blatant corruption of democracy, what was your take on the FBI using false information to obtain a warrant in the FISA court to spy on Carter Page and the GOP POTUS candidacy?”

What color is the sky in your imaginary universe?

  5. What I see is not the ownership of guns, nornis it mental health, what I see is violence In movies and video games.
Kids are being exposed to this violence from a young age and they do not understand consequences .
It is being put out there as acceptable from the makersnof movies and games and they should be taken to task on their role in this violence.
It will take years to reverse this attitude but not until it is realized as a major problem in the thought process of the perpetrators of this violence.

    1. “what I see is violence In movies and video games.”

Yeah, that’s been investigated to high heaven — no link found.

    2. You can certainly speak out about violence in movies and video games. Maybe you can obtain a voluntary reduction.

Don’t try to ban violence in movies and video games – it is unconstitutional.

  6. Do not other countries have shoot-em-up movies and video games?

Then there is only a tenuous link between such violent fiction and actual school shootings.

    1. They do, we are just idiots here from time to time and dont tend to pay attention to the warning signs. Like one father said in florida, “why do our neighborhoods have better security than our schools” ??? Yeah for real.

  7. Ron, if you ever decide to stop using bogus claims and whataboutism to make your points, you’ll have my thanks.

    1) There’s no basis for thinking the Steele Dossier is unfounded, because some of it has been corroborated.

    2) The FBI began watching Carter Page in 2013, long before the Dossier existed.

    1. 1) The parts that were corroborated was publicly known information at the time it was compiled.
      2) The FBI was using Page as an informant, knowing that he was being targeted by Russians. So Page was working for the US against Russian in 2013, and the case ran all the way into 2016. This is now being used as evidence that Page was working for Russia against the US.

    1. It could even be seen as negligence in the court of law at this point. Wake up and smell the threat people.

I agree with this standby 100%

    1. Still trolling this shit?

      Same answer as above.

A heinous attempt by authoritarian male conservatives to control women’s reproductive rights is not equivalent to school shootings.

And only a sociopath would pretend that it was.

    2. “BBD
      Still trolling this shit?
A heinous attempt by authoritarian male conservatives to control women’s reproductive rights is not equivalent to school shootings.”

So why do I have to be trolling just take the numbers and you do the math
So year to date ruffle 149000 abortions
Seem pretty legit to me that there are bigger issues then gun violence

    3. Anybody who can’t tell the difference between women exercising their reproductive rights and school shooters slaughtering children isn’t merely simple-minded. They are a fuckwit.

    4. BBD why are you so hostile and continuously calling names why I am trying to say is look at the big picture I’m not try to take away abortion it has its place but if it’s being used are a form of birth control then that is wrong but let’s just say that half is for medical reasons and the other half is for rape victims so by that being said over 70000 we mom are being raped why aren’t we doing something about that

    5. BBD why are you so hostile and continuously calling names

Because you supported MikeN’s absolutely vile conflation of female reproductive rights with school shooters. What the fuck do you expect? A pat on the head?

why I am trying to say is look at the big picture I’m not try to take away abortion it has its place but if it’s being used are a form of birth control then that is wrong

Whoah. ‘Wrong’? Sez who? Not you and me, that’s for sure. It’s *not* our choice; it is the individual woman’s choice. Get back in your box.

but let’s just say that half is for medical reasons and the other half is for rape victims so by that being said over 70000 we mom are being raped why aren’t we doing something about that

Because ‘we’ have no right whatsoever to dictate reproductive choices to women. Repeat for simple minds: it’s not our choice. It’s theirs. This so fundamental and obvious it hurts when people fail to get it.

  8. Mental illness and guns.
    1. The stress of living in an ever more heavily armed, increasingly uncivilized society is taking a toll on the mental health of many otherwise sane citizens.
    2. Nearly all mass murders in the US are caused by gun lovers. This suggest to me that gun love is related to mental illness and criminality.
    3. Adults who were exposed to lead during childhood have smaller brains. Lead has been shown to interfere with brain-derived neurotropic factor, or BDNF. So letting children handle guns and ammunition and letting them absorb lead through their skin or from hand to mouth contact like eating a PBJS, letting them breath the lead fumes from shooting ( the fumes that come from the lead primer as well as from the superheated contact between the steel barrel of the gun and the lead projectile ) is really a pathologically stupid behavior. But it is encouraged by the NRA.
    4. People who are continually afraid of all other people or of particular types of people are usually considered to have a mental health issue. Providing these people with guns to assuage their fears is pathologically stupid.
    5. People who have no compassion for their fellow human beings are generally considerred to be suffering from mental health issues and to have the potential for extreme anti-social behavior. These people should not have free access to guns.
    6. People who want to devalue, dehumanize, kill, or eradicate people of other genetic or cultural groups are, I think, generally considered to be suffering from cognitive mental illness. Giving such people access to automated, high power weapons designed for mass murder is pathologically stupid.

    1. Re 3. Eeek!!!! Lead fishing sinkers!!!!!!
This lead business needs to be sorted out by authorities everywhere with good science and good policy very soon. Either a bit of lead is ok or its not.

      4. That sounds heaps like my impression of most yanks. Constant fear. Theres always some real or imagined threat. Always.
Killer bees. Bikies. Hippies . Ho chi minh. Guns. Drugs. Power lines. Clowns.
Diabetes. Science. Pseudo science. Native americans. Blacks Whites Yellows. Aids. Any white powdery substance. Muslims. Mexicans.
      Vaccinations. Lack of vaccinations.
Cops Lack of cops. Falling house prices.
Rising house prices. ( quick note. Fair dinkum, anyone who thinks high dwelling prices is a good thing is off their fucking head Ya know an economy has its shit at least half together when theres affordable housing for all.)
      Boo fucking Radley.
Endless list of both real and imagined crap.
The place must be a gold mine for shrinks. Constant background fear.
Nukes are almost never talked about oddly. Yas certainly dont want to ban em. Yas love the arsehole things.
Jeez 4. set me off on a rant. Sorry.

    2. 2. All LEOs and military members are now mentally ill
      1. All people who realize there are guns in the world are mentally ill

1+2+4= a great way to determine everybody is crazy. Time to scrub the mentally unfit. Hello Eugenics.

6 Sounds like Margaret Sanger or the Planned Parenthood types who were dedicated to “weeding out the unfit”.

The other side of the argument stands for the Rights of people, born or in utero, and defends them on the basis of their humanity. Self-defense being one of those Rights. Humanity being uplifted, not denigrated. But those people are considered “fuckwit”s (a spectacular retort!).

    3. All LEOs and military members are now mentally ill
      1. All people who realize there are guns in the world are mentally ill

1+2+4= a great way to determine everybody is crazy. Time to scrub the mentally unfit. Hello Eugenics.

If that is your takeaway from the list given above you are either much more stupid, much more dishonest, or both, than you previously let on.

  9. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that public health actions be initiated when the level of lead in a child’s blood is 5 micrograms per deciliter (µg/dL) or more.Aug 21, 2017 .

There are lots of wonderful curves that show interesting things like the correlation between the cessation of the use of tetraethyl lead in gasoline and declines in violent crimes. In studies of areas around the world. Controlled studies have shown correlations between blood lead levels in childhood and crimal behavior.

Sharing this kind of information hardly constitutes fear. Awareness of how nature works is not fear. If you want to engage in fun but stupid activities, if you don’t want to take in more information because more information forces you to think and make hard decisions about the world around you, well that in itself is an interesting phenomenon worthy of investigation. But I digress. Lead damages brains and nerves. Having lots of massive fucking lead atoms, lead ions, and leaded molecules bouncing around in your brain is not useful or desireable. Oh, and lead also contributes to high blood pressure and a host of other diseases.. Natural and man placed lead is all around us in the environment. Fortunately, you no longer have to breath it in with every breath like we had to during much of the twentieth century due to leaded gasoline ( I lived through over half the twentieth century. Imagine that! And I still have half a brain! And I did lots of fishing and shooting too! I guess that explains a lot…. But here I am! ) . Oh, BTW, there are still a lot of cheap vinyl coated items around that used lead compounds as a chemical stabilizer. Toys. Handles of tools. Things like that. Is anyone asking you to fret about it? No! Ignorance is bliss! But I would recommend watching what sort of things you let your child put in their mouth, and washing your hands before eating your sandwich after a hard morning of tying lead sinkers on your fishing lines. But hey. You do what you want to. If you would rather be a dumb fuck than observe interesting correlations, or take common sense precautions, hey, that is your choice! Have a great day.

    1. Thats an excellently written post about lead and i would like to thank you for it.
It strikes me that its a bit odd consumer protection legislation covered sources such as petrol ( to the point of banning it ) but not things like the sinkers i mentioned to the point of even a simple warning on the labels at point of sale.

      Hmmmm
Might do some digging on this dichotomy.
      Cheers SteveP.

  10. The ban on leaded gasoline was an off shoot of the need to install catalytic convertors on car exhausts to make city air breathable because of nitric oxides coming out of the tail end of cars and causing ground level ozone, or some such story. For people with ozone sensitivity, high ozone levels meant, in extreme cases, choking sore throats on hot summer days. For people with COPD it was a matter of life and death. Picture your worst ever sore throat, like that. Lead poisoned the car catalysts so it had to be taken out of the gasoline. So the air just got better and better. It was really a wonderful thing. You probably can’t imagine the variety of smells that came out of car exhausts before catalytic convertors. The car idling in front of you at a stop sign might smell like various nitrogen oxides or a all sorts of strange unidentifiable smells, depending on how well or badly it was tuned up.

I think that most common lead compounds are not absorbed through your skin, fortunately. Tetraethyl lead was an exception. Handling lead sinkers is probably close to zero hazard if you wash your hands afterward, but that is just my opinion. I wouldn’t want a toddler or young child to handle lead sinkers because their skin is tender and they put things in their mouth.

Shooting on the other hand is a real problem. The lead gets in the air, the particles are miniscule, you can’t help but breath them in, and if you get enough, you end up as crazy as Ted Nugent, poster child for why children should not be exposed to guns. The sweet smell of the “gun powder” ( propellant) at a shooting range is, in effect, a smell that is slowly damaging your brain.

    1. The reason for banning lead shot and lead fishing weights isn’t due to human health issues. For lead shot the major human health issue is the accidental ingestion of lead fragments when the bullet comes apart after hitting bone etc.

      But that’s relatively minimal.

The real issue is lead poisoning in wildlife that scavenges on shot animal that lives long enough to avoid a hunter trying to find it, and in the case of shotgun pellets the fact that most pellets miss, fall into the water, and are quite commonly taken up as grit by waterfowl that’s later scavenged by predators, most notably bald eagles.

  11. Re LiD: “4. That sounds heaps like my impression of most yanks. Constant fear. Theres always some real or imagined threat. Always.”

I’m glad you give us credit for being aware of some real threats. The trouble is that in the U.S. the more real the threat, the more likely it is to generate lies about it. We’ve been lied to many times about real hazards kept hidden by corporations and the government and we’ve been lied to many times about false hazards by various people and groups for various political and/or economic reasons. So, depending on our dispositions, favored news sources, or something, some of us have decided that most, maybe all hazards are nothing that serious, and others develop dark suspicions about nearly everything that anyone describes as a hazard.

Maybe Australia — do Australians really call the country “Oz”? — doesn’t have that kind of history and so people there can approach the topic of hazards more realistically.

  12. So I’m the one felling to get it so rape it’s OK sweet

Congratulations — you live up to the “name” you’ve chosen to be listed with.

    1. simple minded idiot:

try using real words and correct spelling, you’ll have a better chance of having your foolishness seem clear.

  13. Connecticut passed a package of stricter gun laws, including laws banning assault weapons after Sandy Hook. Deaths from guns fell 45% from 2012 to 2016.

Guns and ammo need to be treated with a great deal of respect, like any dangerous object or animal or substance, or they will kill people. Letting any mental defective or untrained nit wit get their hands on a gun that was specifically designed to efficiently kill and maim humans is itself a sign of a mental deficiency. Giving these people guns is on a continuum that includes letting people use spent fuel rods to heat their basements, which we don’t do, and which would result in lots of deaths, like guns do.

Right wingers are apparently so lacking in compassion for anything other than fetal tissue and their god damned mythologies that they are not yet willing to budge on the need to take practical common sense steps to eliminate at least some gun deaths. The great confederate/ hill billy/ western/country mythology of needing to have a heavily armed populace so it is able to threaten the U.S. Government and its army is essentially treason rationalized by the second amendment. It is an immature fantasy nurtured by the gun industry and the right wing lunatics who stoke and exploit the fires of fear.

Today I was in a restaurant listening to some idiots babble about guns not killing people. Which is true to the extent that guns cannot kill people if there are no people anywhere near the guns. So let’s take the most efficient killing machines on the market, the school slaughter specials, and put them out of reach of anybody without a certifiable need for them, proof of mental capacity to handle them responsibly, and extensive training in how and when to use them.

My life, liberty and pursuit of happiness trumps your god damned adolescent gun fantasies.

    Lock them up.

    Melt them down.

    Turn them into something useful.

  14. Oh dear. There is a klinker in the “just keep guns out of the hands of the mentall ill” argument. People who are healthy today sometimes have the misfortune of becoming schizophrenic , paranoid, delusional, demented, or otherwise completely irrational a year from now. This suggests that we will need to schedule an annual mental health examine for all gun holders, just in case they have suffered mental decline since their last examine.

Of course, that still doesn’t prevent gun owners from accidentally or purposefully ingesting loco weed, LSD, too much alcohol, or bath salts while in possession of their fire arm. So maybe assault rifles should have breath analyzers built into them. I would further suggest that they have a blood analyzer built into the weapon that is capable of detecting, at a minimum, all the various extra substances that shooters have been known to have had in their systems at the time they have killed someone inappropriately. Have a needle come out of the stock and extract a blood sample from the shooter. Put a miniature analyzer in the butt.

Or…. just ban the god damned assault rifles. Use your fucking brains.

  15. Re MikeN: “This is now being used as evidence that Page was working for Russia against the US.”

You do realize I hope that the two are not mutually exclusive. There are such things as people who work for both sides.
