New Elements for the Periodic Table

Four elements are being added to the Periodic Table of the Elements. (I’m going to need a new shower curtain). These elements have been “known” for a long time, but are only now being added for reasons explained in the video below.

Meanwhile, have you read The Periodic Kingdom: A Journey Into The Land Of The Chemical Elements, or The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements? Great books. Not current, but then again, the Periodic Table has been around for quite a while.

  1. I agree that Sam Kean’s ‘The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements’ is a very entertaining read.

    Another excellent reference work is Nature’s Building Blocks: An A-Z Guide to the Elements by John Emsley which takes a more structured approach to the topic.

    Typically each element description has the following sections: Human Element, Element of History, Economic Element, Environmental Element, Chemical Element, Element of Surprise, with others such as Food Element and Element of War included when necessary.

    When my father saw my copy he had to buy one of his own. He had to order through a local bookshop, the proprietor decided to stock it and display in window.

  2. Yeah, the older books are sometimes available for cheap as used books on Amazon. Last time I looked Periodic Kingdom was, anyway.
