I agree that Sam Kean’s ‘The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements’ is a very entertaining read.
Another excellent reference work is Nature’s Building Blocks: An A-Z Guide to the Elements
by John Emsley which takes a more structured approach to the topic.
Typically each element description has the following sections: Human Element, Element of History, Economic Element, Environmental Element, Chemical Element, Element of Surprise, with others such as Food Element and Element of War included when necessary.
When my father saw my copy he had to buy one of his own. He had to order through a local bookshop, the proprietor decided to stock it and display in window.
All of these books are available for quite reasonable prices on Amazon and especially eBay.
Yeah, the older books are sometimes available for cheap as used books on Amazon. Last time I looked Periodic Kingdom was, anyway.

Some are silly and surely won’t be picked but some of the serious suggestions here make good sense – I like Ghiorsonium, Nipponium & Sisyphisium.
