Rove Issued Subpoena by US House

The next step is that the Sargent of Arms of the House hunts him down and drags him to the United States Capitol. Apparently they have a room in the basement where they would keep him. (This sort of thing has happened before, but it’s been quite a while.)i-2a8094b235613f5488c7b581481a0aa6-Karl_Rove_Under_Arrest.jpgPresident Bush has already indirectly indicated that he will protect Rove with “executive privilege.” Continue reading Rove Issued Subpoena by US House

Racism and Sexism in the Democratic Primaries

I’m starting to become a little unnerved by the situation with the Democratic party. I’d like to lay out a couple of questions and arguments for discussion. I’m hoping very much that certain people will chime in on this. You know who you are (like, when you get my email asking you to chime in).i-4051261ac7ec655656fd125b62b4973a-Clinton_Obama.jpg Continue reading Racism and Sexism in the Democratic Primaries

Happy Birthday Arthur Conan Doyle

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes.
Arthur Conan Doyle will always be remembered for his Sherlock Holmes tales, including four novels and numerous short stories serialized in The Strand and/or published in various collections. However, Doyle was at least as prolific (probably more) in the area of spiritualism, and according to the London Times obituary published at the time of his death on July 7th 1930, he was tired of Holmes and preferred to be remembered for his books on the spooky ghostly stuff. From that obituary:

Sir Arthur claimed to have had conversations with the spirits of many great men, including Cecil Rhodes, Earl Haig, Joseph Conrad and others. Adrian Conan Doyle, the novelist’s son, said today the whole family believed Sir Arthur would continue to keep in touch with them.”I know perfectly well I am going to have conversations with my father,” he said. Bon Voyage HMS Beagle

It is on this day, May 22nd, 1825 that the HMS Beagle left Plymouth England on its infamous First Voyage. The Beagle was built at the Woolwich Dockyard (launched 11 May 1820) named after the breed of dog. The Beagle was the first ship to sail under the newly constructed London Bridge. However, as there was no great need for this ship in service, she lay moored in storage until this first voyage some five years after being finished.

Technology News

According to Really Linux writer Andrea W. Cordingly, “Chicks Love Linux” …

There I was standing around the LUG booth at the annual Linux expo when I realised that unlike years past, there were considerable numbers of female attendants. No, I am not referring exclusively to those female models hired to promote an OS (I won’t mention which one) wearing skimpy demon costumes.I was truly encouraged to find that women from all backgrounds and ages were making up an increasingly larger portion of those attending such Linux conferences.

Microsoft blames YOUA recent study shows that Microsoft Vista is more vulnerable to malicious code attack than previous versions of Microsoft. Others argue that this is a misreading of the data. But those closest to Microsoft have a different opinion: The increased rate of malicious code attacks on Windows is the fault of the users (victims).Microsoft. They don’t like you. Why would you like Microsoft?Zoom Zoom

Thanks to a new joint effort between Intel and Wind River, you may soon be running Linux in your car.The effort will run under the auspices of the Intel led Moblin.org effort and will deal specifically with the in-vehicle infotainment marketplace. The idea is to create a Linux based Open Infotainment Platform that will run on Intel’s Atom processor. According to a release issued by Wind River, BMW, Bosch and Delphi are among the companies that are already supporting the effort. The actual open source code specification is not yet on the Moblin site though Wind River expects to make it available by August of 2008….

Steve Ballmer ends up with egg on his face

Microsoft has a deal with the government of Hungary which costs the government billions and traps university students in the Microsoft Gap. This is the usual monopolistic evil corporate policy that makes thinking people dislike Microsoft (everyone else is a mindless clone. Sorry, but, well, I’m just sayin’).Anyway, Microsoft Strong Man Steve Ballmer had the audacity to visit a Hungarian University. And what he got, he had coming. Resurrection of DNA Function from an Extinct Genome

Could even this bird be reanimated, gene by gene?
When you are extinct you’re extinct. Everything about you is dead and gone. There are no more of you, every individual in your species is kaput, non existent, used up, as the Pima Indians would say, you are hokum (like a car with a flat tire). In fact, you are hohokum (like a car with no tires). Your existence is erased. You are as blotto as a budgie in Burbank.Indeed, every bit of your being, every gene in your genome, every base pair in your DNA, is no longer extant….Or is it? Can Darwin Make You Healthy?

A talk by Mark Decker!May 20, 7 p.m.Bryant-Lake Bowl, Uptown$5-$10 (pay what you can)Darwin wrote about the competition between individuals that results in the survival of the fittest. But what about competitions within individuals, between the cells inside our bodies? In that struggle, cancer cells could be considered the most successful since they are the most prolific. Can Darwin provide us with a novel approach to understanding cancer? How might Darwin explain the degenerative diseases of old age? Some biologists suspect that evolution actually favors diseases of old age. In fact, an evolutionary approach to studying longevity, scrutinizing the lowly roundworm, may yield secrets to a long and vigorous life. Explore these and other medical applications of Darwinism in a discussion with Mark Decker, an evolutionary biologist in the University’s Biology Program.

Conservatives: What you really really want is to make the gay people get married. Now.

A guest editorial post on gay marriage by Jimmy James Bettencourt.

Portia de Rossi and Ellen DeGeneres are to be married in California. This will ensure the protection of their children and their creditors.

I do not understand why gay marriage is not a conservative issue.

Gay people have been getting away with all kinds of shit for too long and it is time to stop. Straight people are getting screwed and if the government is going to do something useful, they should act now in every state … and nationally … and not just in California and Massachusetts.

Gay people already have several built in advantages in life over straight people. The very fact that they do not have to spend time and energy negotiating with members of the opposite sex in relation to personal matters such as sexual liasons or household division of labor gives them time to expend energy on other things such as running businesses, getting educated, and supporting political causes. Thus, in all the ways we expect people to behave in this free-market democracy, gay people have a significant advantage. And I for one am tired of it.

Everybody knows that the “old boy’s club” is the way to go if you want to get things organized. But the gay version of this … and there is more than one possible version … is clearly much more organized and powerful. I suppose this is because gay people are, once again, less distracted by the difficulties of being straight. This is probably why quasi-gay organizations like Bohemian Grove and the Tri-Lateral Commission have pretty much taken over the worlds of finance and arms trafficking. respectively.

Impacts of anthropogenic climate change many, varied

A new study led by NASA links anthropogenic climate change to a wide range of effects. The study involved scientists from about a dozen institutions and agencies, and looked at biological impacts arising from global temperature increase since the 1970s. The article is published in Nature. According to lead author Cynthia Rosenweig, “This is the first study to link global temperature data sets, climate model results, and observed changes in a broad range of physical and biological systems to show the link between humans, climate, and impact … Humans are influencing climate through increasing greenhouse gas emissions and the warming is causing impacts on physical and biological systems that are now attributable at the global scale and in North America, Europe, and Asia. From the abstract of the paper: Continue reading Impacts of anthropogenic climate change many, varied
