QUEST visits the National Ignition Facility in Livermore, where scientists will soon aim the world’s largest laser at a target the size of a pencil eraser. The goal? Nuclear fusion — and, they say, the answer to the world’s clean energy needs.

  1. Jeez, are they ever going to finish that thing. I like the momentary mention of critics saying it could be used as a “loophole” to get around restrictions on weapons testing. Weapons design testing was the justification for building the thing in the first place! That’s the primary mission.
