When Geeks Don’t Have Enough To Do

I was very interested in reading an on line article comparing two Linux distributions, Ubuntu (the one I use) and Fedora (a very different distribution that I used to use). Hey, any article with a sexy title like “Ubuntu 7.10 & Fedora 8 Performance Compared” is not going to fail to get your interest, right?Well, it turns out that the results of this difference are rather astounding:i-9c791b4cffc4ce187a36eb10763d1666-02.pngJesus’ tits, Margaret, they’re identical! The article has several other graphs that show exactly the same thing. Well, I suppose if this was downhill skiing or something, we could get legitimately excited about a difference of several hundreds of a percent.

  1. But why is this surprising? They use almost the same kernel and likely the same or similar libc and xorg version, so I would be surprised if there was a larger difference. Performance would be the *last* criterion if I had to choose a linux distribution.
