Apparently, these papers will be available for OpenAccess later this afternoon. While they are important in the details they provide (and I’m VERY happy to see them coming out), they are not surprising or earth shaking, with respect to our overall understanding of human evolution.

“Gentlemen Shall Lean to the Left”
For the last several years, the conservative religious right wing has been effective in winning over the hearts and “minds” of a large percentage of the American people. They’ve even managed this in areas that make no sense. Tort reform. Health care reform. Unions. Across the United States, working class people are embracing policies in these areas that will ultimately, over the medium and long term, do them great harm.
Everything but the kitchen sink ..
… works. So I had to fix the kitchen sink. This is what I did in the kitchen yesterday:
The reason that I mention this is that I wanted to tell you that Ask the Builder has the best info, in this case, of the places I checked out.

New research changes our view of the origin of the Komodo Dragon
Depending on what your view was, originally, of course. I’ve got a review of the piece published in PLoS here at Surprising Science. Where I am blogging for this week and next.
Princeton, Minnesota Bomb Threats
Princeton, Minnesota, about five miles north of Zimmerman and thirty or so miles north of me, is the site of a rather odd event. Three “suspicious packages” were found around town, one by the post office, one at the high school, and one at the public utilities building.

Mars Climate Change Patterns Seen in Ice Caps
You may know that much of the climate change on earth over the last two million years-the coming and going of ice ages-is caused by the “orbital geometry” of the planet. The amount of planetary tilt and the time of year the tilt occurs change over time. When the Northern Hemisphere is less tilted towards the sun on June 21st, and at the same time the Earth is as far from the sun in its elliptical orbit as it ever gets, ice age conditions prevail. This makes ice ages on Earth pretty regular, cyclic, events….

Sagan and Hawking’s new music video
Here at The Lake I don’t get enough intertubules to watch a video reliably. So I can’t separate the DJ effect from the Slow Connection effect in this video, but it looks good:

Cuban rapper busted, released.
The Cuban Rapper AL2 of the bad Los Aldeanos has been arrested by the Cuban Police, and released. Meanwhile, some of his personal effects including a computer were confiscated. Rappers are considered very dangerous by the Cuban government. You may recall a major bust up of a concert there a few weeks ago. I think this arrest was not entirely unexpected.
The following is a statement from very close to the source of the events that that was sent to me by Emetrece for your information.
