Go right to the source and ask the horse

We should probably not allow the racing of 2 year old horses (though see comments below). I think this is only done in the US and a couple of other countries. It is not allowed elsewhere.

We may need to admit that horse-racing has become corrupt. Well, certain areas of horse racing were always corrupt. Don’t ask me how I know, but I think the statute of limitations is up on that anyway.

And now, Cancel Culture is ruining everything!

Maybe we should cancel the Kentucky Derby as it exists today. Shut it down, tweak the rules, clean the process up, and restart in a few years. Maybe be nicer to the horses.

  1. Go right to the source and ask the horse.

Thoughts on the minimum age required to get that reference?

    1. I’ve heard that 2 year old horses get more injuries, but 3 year olds or older are better off.

  2. Comprehensive tracking of severe injuries in thoroughbreds only began about 12-15 years ago. But statistically a horse that races at two is less likely to suffer a catastrophic injury than those that don’t race till they are 3 or 4.

    1. That is a somewhat iffy conclusion to draw on the available studies, and misses a key point.

There is controversy, and some uncertainty. But the problem isn’t necessarily catastrophic injury during races. The injures that seem to plague training 2 year olds (and they are training when the are younger to race at 2) is in the training more commonly than the races.

The main benefit of racing younger horses is quicker return on investment by the owners.

It has been argued, and this makes sense, that correct and well designed training of horses is more important than the age at which they start. Most current training systems do not provide enough exercise of the right kind in younger horses.

There is research that indicates that two year old racers race longer life-time, and other research that suggests a very high attrition rate of 2 year olds.

Note that this research is all being done in the context of controversy over whether or not to race younger horses, and there is an economic benefit to the owners to race younger horses, and animal cruelty /right/etc activists are likely to skew interpretations the opposite way. So just reading the literature on its own is a bit tricky.
