This is the Republican playbook:
Early 2009: We’ll vote for your bill if you make the stimulus smaller.
OK we’ll do that. Vote for our bill!
No.
Late 2009: We’ll vote for your bill if you leave out most of the important provisions.
OK, we’ll do that. Vote for our bill!
No.
2010: Hey, we have this bill for immigration reform.
OK, but we’ll vote for that if you remove most of the provisions.
OK. In fact, we’ll make our bill exactly like your bill from two years ago. Vote for our bill now!
No.
2021: Hey, we’ll vote for your bill if you make all the help smaller.
Um …
Democrats: Wise up! There is not bipartisanship. There has not been bipartisanship in decades.
I’ve always been surprised that scumbag grassley was honest enough to answer “no”.
I also always been surprised that he didn’t continue “Because you’re not white.”
This is exactly correct: The GOP $618B counterproposal is a delaying tactic. President Biden and the Democrats should proceed with reconciliation with all deliberate speed, as I’ve argued on the Washington Post and the New York Times. Fortunately, most of the other commenters also take that position.
Even more fortunately, it looks like that is what the Democrats intend to do.
