And by “Shut. Up.” I mean shut up about whether or not global warming is real.
The National Climatic Data Center of NOAA has just released the number representing the Earth’s surface temperature for February and it is a shocking 0.82 degrees C above the 20th century average. This is the second warmest Feb on record, and I’m pretty sure it is the third warmest month on record, in that data base.
Roughly speaking, the coldest we have experienced, the Last Glacial Maximum, was about 6 degrees colder than at present. It is generally thought that we need to keep the global surface temperature below about 2 degrees C above the preindustrial level. The 20th century average used by NOAA includes decades warmed considerably by human caused greenhouse gas pollution; the actual difference between the best estimate (BEST 1750-1850) of the pre-industrial temperature and the present is about 1.5 degrees C.
This high value is not surprising since the estimate of the Earth’s surface temperature from NASA GISS, which came out a few days ago, also places February very high in temerature.
March, by the way, has been pretty warm. We’ve had quite a trend of very warm months, and it appears to not be letting up.
For a comparative perspective, see also this.
But of course, all the armchair scientists are going to look out their windows and say, “Look, snow!” as if weather and climate are the same thing once again.
“We may only be two months into 2015, but already the year is burning up the charts, setting up the possibility that it could topple 2014’s newly minted record for hottest year.
Together, January and February were the warmest such period on record, according to global data released Wednesday by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. With an El Niño (albeit a weak one) in place, there’s potential for that warmth to stick around and elevate temperatures for more of the year.”

Here’s the expected spin for this post:
“Climate alarmist tells skeptics to ‘shut up’, admits that latest February is not as warm as previous years.”

Dream, dream, the impossible dream… do you know the song?
The only reason the temp is going up; is because: preparing for the Paris conference! If you think that: apparatchiks can monitor the ”global” temp to one hundredth of a degree… my tiers will not help you much – you need different help…
Nobody knows the ”global” temp to save his / her life – because nobody is monitoring on 99,99999999999% of the planet PLUS: only is taken the ”hottest” minute in 24h, and ignored all the other 1439 minutes; which fluctuate independently. it has being already proven that the phony warming is just that, phony – so: relax and enjoy life! Stop dreaming about catastrophes, it only shortens your life. Start to think positive, instead of daydreaming catastrophes -> you will regain respect in yourself!
As the usual suspects may find it harder to ignore the absence of the data they disparage or deny , let’s show them what the absence of the dats looks .like.
In a terrific irony–and a reminder that local weather is not climate–we have just experienced the most awful February on record here in Maine. I think Jennifer Francis is right: climate change has broken the jetstream and we’re in for a rough ride here in New England. Look at the saggy temperatures through Feb. on this chart–and the huge-ass hump in the snow amounts:

Cosmicomics, that map in your link is just hilarious: It shows the polar bear’s ass sitting right on top of New England! I’m feeling it as a speak…..

Cheer up . The recoed cold celivered to Maine by the 4O knot Montreal Express may have been reckoned a heat wave in Churchill the day before .
That change in the broken jet stream is also making life here in The Great Southwest miserable, too: Drought and record heat.
Or, to look at things with denialist rose-colored glasses, the average weather for the U.S. everywhere is just lovely.
And, on a tangential note, we have this sad display out of Florida – but remember the governor has not issued a decree telling state employees not to say “climate change”

Dean:
The content in that link is hilarious. Perhaps “atmospheric reemployment” will catch on in the Sunshine State.
