Governor Rick Perry’s position is that he believes in “Intelligent Design” as a matter of faith and intellect. Well, his faith is out of place (did he not swear to protect and defend the US constitution? On a bible?) and his intellect is clearly damaged by exposure to those wide open Texas spaces. Between his ears.
Here’s the story, where you can see the news bit and if you like leave a comment! (I did.)
Notice the major blunder the reporter in this video makes: Explicitly distinguishing between creationism and intelligent design. Also, of course, the unquestioning assumption that public opinion is the arbiter of what is valid scientifically.
Texas. Jeesh.
Yeah, my state sucks. Glad to see Bill White has at least a bit of sense on the issue, though. I actually had no idea that some people honestly can’t see the creationism and ID are the exact same thing, either. Hmm…
Yeah, Texas is a weird place. I don’t expect people who are uninterested in science to understand the ID/creationism connection, but it is sad that supposedly well-educated people either don’t get it, or lie about not getting it. I’d guess it is politically convenient to lie about it.
On the other hand, it must be nice to live in a state that is essentially immune to the current recession. Maybe they are more interested in economics than science. (yes, I did imply that economics isn’t a science.)
Tom, what I’ve heard is that Texas experienced the bursting of its real estate bubble a decade or so before the rest of the country. Texas has not really escaped a recession, it has just (mainly) had different timing. Due to dumb luck (or dumb lack of luck), which is pretty much how our dumb economy works.
There’s something about the wording of that story (emphasis added.)
“Fewer than half of American adults say evolution is the best explanation for the origins of human life on earth, that’s according to a recent study by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, while many other Americans believe in intelligent design.”
I get the feeling that this subtly denigrates the evolution believers.
Then, at the end of the piece (here the emphasis was in the sentence as spoken by the young reporter):
“Currently, schools must learn about the theory of evolution, but groups like the Texas Freedom Network argue that evolution is not taught with the same authority as other subjects.”
The Texas Freedom Network, of course, argues correctly against teaching unscientific objections to evolution in Texas science classes. But this last quote seems to suggest that evolution is somehow less than authoritive.
D’oh! Make that “authoritative.”
Admit it, y’all are just jealous ‘cuz you are not from Texas. It’s not like we have a monopoly on demagogic politicians.
This man is in control of the State of Texas, which also means he is in charge of the Texas National Guard and….this is a wee bit scary. He is not a loon, so is he just pandering to the militantly ignorant?
Or he really does believe what he says, and Texas is in worse trouble than I thought. Governor Perry stated that ID should be taught alongside “theories of evolution”. What is this rubbish? There is “A Theory of Evolution”, which has withstood every attempt at falsification since it was first propounded.
The fact that children believe in the Tooth Fairy does not mean it exists. And the fact that “Fewer than half of American adults say evolution is the best explanation for the origins of human life on earth” merely proves that a lot of Americans are utterly and wilfully ignorant, and/or have been very badly served by their schools.
On a broader perspective, this dumbing-down of the education system, combined with the increasing difficulties faced by foreign students who wish to do post-graduate work in the USA, is going to have negative effects on the American standard of living.
Texas is the BEST state in the USA. In 2009 (a recession year) over 50% of the jobs created in the USA was in TX. We have such awesome laws that companies are flocking to Texas to open for business. Rick Perry is the longest governor in the history of the USA. People that mock creationism has no idea what they are talking about. If California can force gay and lesbian history down Childrens throats, we (Tx) can have creationism or intelligent design. Any sane human being can look at the human brain, outer-space, or even how the round earth holds bodies of water (just to name a few) and know that there is a God. No human can make a planet. If you don’t believe in God, then I feel so sorry for you and I pray that the Holy Spirit enters your life and helps you see the truth.
Science project: go into your bathroom and fill up your sink with water. Then take your hand (with water in it) and make a “ball” of water. Oh, you can’t? That’s because humans cannot make what God has made.
May the Lord bless you today!
