US Census Worker Lynched?
A part time teacher and US Census worker was lynched in Kentucky earlier today. The word “FED” was scrawled on his body.
Michele Bachmann, I wonder what your opinion of this killing is?
The AP and other agencies are just starting to report this.
Palin fails to impress world
Sarah Palin gave her first speech outside the US, to the CLSA Investors Forum, in Tokyo, on Reqaganomics, China and Human Rights, Tibet, and the economices of the United States and Asia. She apparently also covered Alaskan Moose. The speech was 90 minutes long. Several people left early, there was apparently some kind of non-disclosure agreement because the press could not get most people to issue any kind of opinion, and those who did opine were generally non-committal with some mildly positive, some mildly negative. Opinions gleaned from the CNN story:
What were the Watergate Plumbers looking for?
John Dean revealed the answer on Olbermann’s show today. And the answer is …

A Trail of Shame: Racism and the Anti-Obama Movement
A couple of weeks ago, I published a very controversial post titled “Maybe We Should Have Elected a White President After All” about the ongoing, possibly growing racism in connection with Obama’s presidency. The idea that a lot of the anti-Obama, including anti-health care reform, rhetoric and action was racially motivated was understood by some and rejected by others who seem to not want to see any significant racism in the mix. This was parallel to the head in the sand reaction to my earlier post on the the arrest of Skip Gates in Cambridge Massachusetts last July.
There are those of us who have been saying all along that racism has played a role in anti-Obama sentiment. Does this mean that we think people who supported Hillary instead were all racists? No. Hell, they were Democrats. The vast majority were not orienting their politics in an overtly racist manner, choosing Clinton over Obama because Obama is black (though some were, as you will see below). Does it mean that we think that every objection to an Obama policy is racist? No. There are many valid objections, depending on one’s point of view, to various policies by Obama. Hell, Obama is a smart guy. He probably objects to some of his own policies! Does it mean that we think that every utterly unprecedented outburst of “You Lie!!!!!” in congress by a known racist from South Carolina during a Presidential address to the Joint Session of the House and Senate is a racist act? Well, duh…
Over the last few days the left of center and centrist/moderate wings of the mainstream press have gotten on board with this and have begun to discuss issues of racism in the current health care debate. As usual, the liberal blogosphere leads!!!
Anyway, I thought it would be fun (in a “this whole thing makes me kind of nauseated” kind of way) to compile a random grab bag, ordered in time, of racist bits and pieces from way back before the election up to recent times. Even more recent bits and pieces on this important discussion can be found by just paging back through this blog over the last two days or so.
The reason for doing this is to have a post to point to when people say “Oh yeah? What racism!!!11!!”
Here we go:

Ostracize Josh
A man from Rogers, Minnesota…a small town in the Sixth Congressional District represented by Michele Bachmann…went through the trouble of strapping on his Glock .40 caliber handgun and dropping his Kel Tec 380 in his pocket before visiting the site of President Obama’s talk last Saturday in Minneapolis. His name is Josh Hendrickson and both handguns were loaded.
He went to the speech to stand outside and show off his cammo and his guns. The press took note and had a chat with him. Hendrickson told them, “I’m a pretty laid-back guy that loves his kids and his country.”
Hendrickson was released from jail about a month ago after serving for an assault charge. …

Rachel Maddow and Jonathan Alter Agree with me on the Racism Thing
This is a bit long but very much worth the watch. Rachel and Jonathan Alter discuss the racialized rhetoric, the Republican strategy, and the political pattern that the current wave of unhinged and uncooth behavior is part of.

Ninety One Percent of Canadians believe that their heath care system is better than that of the US.
But when Conservatives for Patients Rights, an anti-health care organization, made a commercial designed to scare Americans into opposing heath care reform, they lied to various Canadians and tricked them into making the Canadian system look bad. The same organization did the same thing earlier with the British health care system.
Heres the ad:

Obama vs. Bachmann Head to Head (Obama wins)
If you were in the Twin Cities last Saturday and wanted to do something political, you had two choices. Tool over to St. Cloud and visit Michele Bachmann’s Town Hall meeting, which she rudely scheduled on the same day as a visit to Minneapolis by President Obama. Or, you could go to see President Obama.
Rep. Michele Bachmann was in St. Cloud on Saturday for a town hall meeting. Apparently quite a few people in her district just don’t care about her anymore. Her event at the St. Cloud Technical High School was attended by only 60 people!
In contrast, 18,000 people were at the Target Center to listen to President Obama’s speech and he had to compete with the Gopher’s first home game in their new stadium!

Joe Wilson’s outburst is not about civility. It’s about racism.
It has been said that civility is an excellent conversation stopper. And it can be, because demanding civility has been a way to control or limit the voice of alterity or the unprivileged. When it comes to Joe Wilson’s now-infamous shouted remark at the joint session, the question arises as to whether the tone or style of this act was the important issue, or whether the meaning or content of what he said … the truth of his “You lie!” … is what should be focused on. In my view, the answer is: Both, neither, and you are missing the point.
I offer the following:
