You might want to check the comments and chime in. Here’s a taste:
Conservatives tend to view handguns as a means of self-defense. Whereas liberals tend to view handguns as purely destructive devices.
Perhaps more importantly, conservatives tend to view guns and wars as tools that solve problems.
Whereas liberals tend to see guns and wars as creating problems. (No battle ended the Irish “Troubles.” Egypt is working toward reform, while Iraq and Afghanistan are still a mess.)
When you’re surprised by a criminal, it rarely helps to own a gun. The sole purpose of handguns is to kill people — as, all too often, they do…
The comments to that letter are frightening.
A gun can not defend you from anything. It will not deflect bullets or knives or bludgeons. The only way you can use a gun for defence is to shoot first and shoot to kill.
I do not want to live in a society in which the only way I can protect myself and my family is to shoot first and I don’t see how anyone who does want such a society can call themselves civilised. Fortunately, I live seven thousand miles from such a society and I’ll do my best to keep it that way.
Well, I really don’t want to bother registering at that site to comment, so I’ll do so here.
I have to say I actually understand their arguments and concerns about rights being taken away if the government knows the people don’t have any weapons. However, I suspect a lot of these same people are also complaining about the “hooligans” of the OWS movement. This almost amazes me. It’s like they fail to see any alternative solutions to problems other than use of guns or the need for guns to intimidate when the OWS movement is right there, showing them how peaceful solutions are possible.
It makes me wonder if it is projection in some sense. Like, are they people who are easily intimidated, so they need their guns to intimidate back?
Anyway, I’ve got a lot of jumbled thoughts on this, so I’ll stop there before I type out a completely incoherent mess.
