As many as 107 Tennessee public school districts could be illegally preventing students from accessing online information about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues, according to a letter to sent to school officials by the American Civil Liberties Union.

The letter demands that Knox County Schools, Metro Nashville Public Schools, and the Tennessee Schools Cooperative unblock the Internet filtering category designated “LGBT” so that students can access political and educational information about LGBT issues on school computers.

  1. ah yes, the internet: the scourge of close-minded societies from deep-red China to deep-red Tennessee :-p

seriously though I do hope that the ban gets lifted. In places like that, the internet is probably the only source of information on the outside world and the only way to teach kids that they’re not alone.

  2. Huh. Apparently filtering for LGBT websites (but *not* the “ex-gay” ones) is the default setting on the software, provided by “Education Networks of America.” Hope the ACLU takes a look at *them*, too.

  3. what is your problem? kids have access to materials about lessies and queers in libraies and other places like HOME COMPUTERS. why should your smut be in schools anyway?leave the kids alone, let their parents decide, and let our PAID teachers and school principals run their schools. if you are that concerned, become a teacher.

  4. kathy, we’ll leave the kids alone when you do. Until you stop calling them names and marginalizing them, we don’t have much choice but to make sure they have the support to deal with the hateful crap you’re throwing their way.
