You’ve already seen Johnny’s Wii Remote Hacks … and if you have not go and look. This is not about Wii, or video game, or anything like that. This is about transforming the relationship between technology and society. So if you missed Johnny Lee: Wii Remote hacks please go have a look. It is the TED Talk with a record number of interruptions and the largest standing ovation. Then, com back here and have a look at this other video from my new hero, Johnny Lee:Tracking Your Fingers with the Wiimote
Using an LED array and some reflective tape, you can use the infrared camera in the Wii remote to track objects, like your fingers, in 2D space. This lets you interact with your computer simply by waving your hands in the air similar to the interaction seen in the movie “Minority Report”. The Wiimote can track upto 4 points simultaneously. The multipoint grid software is a custom C# DirectX program.
More information and the software here. The down side? So far Lee has not engaged in development on the Mac/Linux platform, so his interface software (which talks to the Wii remote via bluetooth) uses VB.net and Visual C# (ick).there is a project on sourceforge.net that is seeking Linux developers.
I currently have a request for Linux developers to help make a port. It’s a very small program and could be done in a single day by a competent programmer.
If you are a Linux developer or know one, and are impressed with this project, PLEASE click HERE and get going on this!!!!(Please allow me this dig: Almost all development that happens on Linux happens in environments that are fairly easy to port to PC/Windows. The reverse is not true. More ick.)
