Capturing the Elusive Streaming Video
How to convert a YouTube or Google streaming video into a file that you can put in your pocket and carry around with you.
The Problem: Streaming Video is not enough.
Do you need to save a Youtube or Google video into a file? I’m not sure about the legality or practicality of doing this, so anything you read here could break your computer or get you arrested, that’s up to you.
I know I do this some times for a very good reason. My wife is a school teacher, and schools are run by reality-blind bureaucrats who come up with things like “zero tolerance” policies … so of course, most schools seem to have blocking of almost all useful Internet content, especially and including Google Videos and Youtube. So, if Amanda wants to show some useful video to her students, she can’t. The bureaucrats are happy, the students are uneducated. Whatever.
Finally, an LOL creature with something worthwhile to say!

Computers Need Not Contribute to Global Warming
A SiCortex SC648 supercomputer and a Linux cluster of 648 CPU’s and a TB of main memory woudl draw about 1,200 watts. That’s gotta widen your Carbon Footprint! Continue reading Computers Need Not Contribute to Global Warming

- Konrad Zuse died in Hünfeld, 1995. Zuse was an engineer and a pioneer in the computer field. He developed the world’s first functional program-controlled computer, the Z3, in 1941. He also designed the first high-level programming language, Plankaklul in 1948, although the langauge was never implemented during his lifetime. He also founded the first dot-com, before there were dot-coms, in 1946. source

- Republic Day in Niger. Niger is a landlocked nation in West Africa (barely … almost Central Africa). The official language is French, and it includes 1.26 million square kilometers of land.
Not all days are spectacular, so I removed the non-English and padded what was left.

KDE 4.0
KDE 4.0 is upon us. I believe it is essentially out there, being tested and messed with, with the final launch etc. happening in a few weeks (mid January).KDE is a Window Manager (no “s” in that Window, please note) for Linux. I’m not big on KDE myself, but my daughter uses it.KDE 4.0, compared with earlier versions, will have more stuff, be flashier, etc. etc. etc. as we would expect. And, it will use about 30% less memory.Oh, and have you heard that Vista Service Release 1.1 is going to reduce the memory load of Windows Vista by 4%? No, you haven’t heard that? Well, of course not, because no one ever said it, and it is never going to happen!!!Oh, wait, did I say KDE was going to have 30% less memory demand? Ooops, I messed up. It’s actually 40% less memory! Imagine that.Details here.
