I took my little boat out at 5 AM to catch the last one before school. I ended up using binoculars and dark glass. I overloaded my retinas, but I was rewarded with seeing the dot just as the sun came up in Nantucket Sound.
Of course, my students made fun of my little boat as I had to trailer it to school to get there on time. (Boat named “Uncertainty”. On one side of the outboard was the word, on the other side the inequality).
If the timing is right, I’ll be there again.
No binoculars and no telescope to project an enlarged image. 🙁 Fortunately I have an ‘integrating sextant’ (a strange name for a device which is really an averaging octant) – I’ll have to dust it off and see if it has a filter dark enough to use with the sun. I just hope I have clear weather.
