I think the “reasonable belief” clause in the Stand Your Ground law should still allow for Zimmerman to be prosecuted.
And does not this same law apply to Treyvon Martin? If somebody follows me and then gets out of their car to confront me, don’t I have a reasonable belief that someone is trying to cause me harm?
Between Jan 1st, and Feb 26th, when Treyvon was murdered, George Zimmerman, living in a LOW CRIME area, made FOURTY-SIX 911 calls to the police to report ‘suspicious people’. That is nearly ONE A DAY. Clearly, Zimmerman had a level of paranoia which makes me question why he should be licensed to carry a gun at all. This was just a tragedy waiting to happen.
Someone said that the photos showing up on the news are old photos does anyone have a recent photos of Trayvon? Not that it makes a difference but I know the photos is not a 17 yr old. I feel the police has failed the public and Trayvon’s family.

That was my thought too. He was “standing his ground”. If he’d killed Zimmerman though (say, pushed him, Zimmerman tripped, hit his head and died), I wonder how quick the authorities would be to arrest Martin. The attorney was right…the world is watching and right now we’re not seeing much that is complimentary.
Any time I head into the states I feel like I’m in a time warp back into the 50s when it comes to attitudes. I never feel quite safe wondering if some yahoo is going to pull out a gun and shoot me, either deliberately or accidentally as I get in the line of fire as the hero tries to stop a crime or perceived crime (like walking while black).

Indeed. I wrote a whole blob post on exactly that.
