Bachmann, Teabaggers, remain annoying, stupid.

Bachmann’s health care claims falter

Bachmann has said the new health care act will unleash a wave of new federal funding for abortion … contrary to Bachmann’s claims, the law doesn’t fundamentally change federal policy on abortion …a Bachmann spokesman has backed off her prediction…

Tea Party rally cost taxpayers nearly $14k

…Bachmann solidified her place in the national spotlight … when she gathered thousands of Tea Party activists in front of the U.S. Capitol for a “House Call on Washington,” to stop the Democrats’ health care bill….. Months later, official expense reports show that the boisterous, 10,000-person rally to rein in big government and stop runaway spending cost U.S. taxpayers nearly $14,000.

The April 14th Tea Party Rally: A Cup of Rather Weak Tea

The rally was truly weird–and not just due to the stated purpose. There were probably as many people opposed to the Tea Buggers as there were Tea Buggers. We anti-Tea Buggers were ready to roll…and it was really dull. Seriously, break out the Barcaloungers….

Discover Channel: Anything to make a buck.

What next, will we be seeing the CEO of Discovery Channel out harpooning whales?

The media conglomerate Discovery Communications used to be known for their earth-friendly offerings. But they’ve just paid millions to Sarah Palin to host a “nature” show, despite her decidedly anti-environmental stance: She vocally advocates for habitat-destroying oil drilling, she denies global warming is a human-caused threat, and she spearheaded a brutal wolf-slaughter program as governor of Alaska.

How To Actually Get the Kindle Reader To Work on your Linux Desktop (UPDATED)

UPDATE: GO HERE.
UPDATE UPDATE: I no longer have that file, because it is not the most current one. However, people who want to read their Kindle books on their Linux machine need only to use the browser-based Kindle Cloud Reader. It’s pretty nice.

There is a Kindle reader application for the PC (and the Mac and the iPod touch). But not Linux. Which makes us sad because without Linux, your Kindle wouldn’t even turn on.

But despite this deeply insulting unforgivable slight by Steve Bozo or whatever his name is, diligent supergeeks have solved this problem temporarily. The problem is, as usual, the Intertubes are full of people who know diddley squat but don’t seem to understand that, so you will find ample instructions to make the Kindle for PC work on your Linux computer, and you will have very little success.

Unless you know two secrets that I know.

National Day of Prayer is Unconstitutional

A federal judge in Wisconsin ruled the National Day of Prayer unconstitutional Thursday, saying the day amounts to a call for religious action.

U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb wrote that the government can no more enact laws supporting a day of prayer than it can encourage citizens to fast during Ramadan, attend a synagogue or practice magic.

“In fact, it is because the nature of prayer is so personal and can have such a powerful effect on a community that the government may not use its authority to try to influence an individual’s decision whether and when to pray,” Crabb wrote.

Massey Energy: “If you attend the funeral of your co-workers, you’re fired”

… if you take time off from work to do so.

Nice.

Massey Energy told employees that if they miss work to attend the funerals they would be fired, workers said. A Massey worker, who did not give his name because he is afraid of losing his job, said that his coworkers were outraged that they were not given time off to mourn their friends and brothers.

The WSWS spoke to workers and relatives outside a local market. Chuck Smith, an unemployed miner with seven years work underground, said Massey’s decision to force miners to work during the funerals was a calculated move. “What would it look like if a bunch of people wearing Massey uniforms showed up to the funeral yelling ‘damn Massey?'”

What is skepticism?

There are two things I’ve learned over the last year.

1) If you get a room full of self-described skeptics, gathered to converse skeptically about something, a minor tweaking of the conversation can cause an alarmingly large percentage of said “skeptics” to start spewing utter nonsense; and

2) Manyself-described skeptics seem to believe (yes, believe) that nothing can be believed, and assert that the ONLY thing that EVER matters is “the” truth, and at the same time insist that “the truth” can never be trusted (unless they themselves have uttered it). Such an approach can cause said skeptic to wield a skeptical hammer that is so big it obscures their vision to the determent of their intended goal. That a significant subset of these “skeptics” are sociopathic and terribly annoying is unfortunate.

I for one welcome our Overlords from Galaxy M82

There is something strange in the cosmic neighbourhood. An unknown object in the nearby galaxy M82 has started sending out radio waves, and the emission does not look like anything seen anywhere in the universe before.

“We don’t know what it is,” says co-discoverer Tom Muxlow of Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics near Macclesfield, UK.

Whatever it is appreas to be moving at four times the speed of light. In other words, it has a Warp Drive. And, it is moving towards us, more or less. Well, at a slight angle. Better to surround us that way!!!!

I’m going to go stock up on canned foods while you go over to New Scientist and read about the details.

Alert: Evolution Suppressed in Connecticut

“Mr. Tangarone, a 17-year veteran of the Weston school system, claims that a program he wanted to teach about Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln was rejected by the school administration because it involved teaching evolution — the scientific theory that all life is related and has descended from a common ancestor.”
