Surprise! That’s the name of a town in Arizona, and that’s where the victims in this particular story live. A young Iraqi-American woman was living a very westernized lifestyle, and that lifestyle would not play in Peoria. And by Peoria, I mean Peoria Arizona, where the young woman’s crazy “traditional” father lived.
PEORIA, Ariz. – Police in a Phoenix suburb are looking for a man suspected of running down his daughter because she was becoming too “Westernized” and was not living according to their traditional Iraqi values.
Police say 48-year-old Faleh Hassan Almaleki of Glendale allegedly ran his daughter down Tuesday at a parking lot in Peoria.
Wouldn’t it be more traditional to run her over with a camel than a car?
If that desert ever had camels, the native americans ate them thousands of years ago.
There have been cases of honor killings in Europe as well where brothers and fathers have killed daughters and sisters to restore family honor. Note that these sorts of situations have occurred with both Muslims and Christian families so we shouldn’t see this as an exclusively Muslim issue. It is in some ways more of a cultural rather than a religious issue although religion presumably has something to do with it.
@ Joshua Zelinsky
The honor killings I have heard about in the past few years were perpetrated by Muslims. There may be some Christians who murder members of their own family. The difference is the Muslims seem to believe the killings are approved of (or even required) by their religion.
If you are trying to say: “Islam is a religion of peace.” in another form, I am still not buying it.
Least you think I am Christian, I am not, they have their own attrocities.
@ #2: Until the early 1900s, feral camels did live in the southwestern desert. They were descended from the animals of the US Army Camel Corps, a short-lived experiment in the mid-1800s. (It was Jefferson Davis’s idea.) The project was abandoned because the camels were difficult to manage and because they scared the horses (and possibly because the US didn’t want anything to do with anything having to do with Jefferson Davis after he became president of the Confederacy). Supposedly the camels have died out, but rumors of sightings still crop up occasionally.
(BTW, the world’s largest population of feral camels â?? over a million animals â?? can be found in Australia. Australian camels are said to be the only truly “wild” dromedary camels in the world.)
