A bill that would have mandated that partners in civil unions be added to all state insurance laws was put on hold just as House committee was about to hold a hearing on the measure.
Rep. Edward Butler (D), the bill’s sponsor, pulled the legislation, saying there were other measures dealing with same-sex couples that should be considered first.
Among those is a proposal to change New Hampshire’s year old civil union law to allow for full marriage. A hearing on that bill is scheduled for Feb. 5.
Republicans have filed a bill that would start the process to amend the state constitution to ban same-sex marriage and the legislature will consider a bill that would maintain civil unions and direct the government to recognize civil unions and gay marriages performed in states and countries where they are legal as civil unions in New Hampshire.

Not so fast. 😉
There is a better bill that should be focused on instead, which is why this action has been taken. Another bill is set to make Civil Unions into full Marriage, making the shelved bill moot.
Why waste time on two bills when one does more?
Rep. Butler has done a lot for GBLT rights in the state.
Let’s not forget that New Hampshire is the only state thus far to provide rights to GBLT couples on their own conscious. Not an act of the Judicial branch.
“Rep.
I think if you read the middle part of the excerpt you posted again closer, you’ll notice that Rep. Butler pulled the bill because there’s a better bill already in the works that turns civil unions into full marriage, thus accomplishing the same end result as Rep. Butler’s bill and then some, as my wife pointed out above. With all due respect, I don’t believe my state is taking a step backwards on that at all. That’s a great step forward, and with a very dominant Democrat majority in the state legislature we have a very good chance of making same-sex marriage a reality this year. Why split the effort when we can all concentrate on one bill?
Let’s also not sell Rep. Butler short. As a transwoman I am very thrilled that he has also introduced a bill (HB 415) to make it illegal to discriminate on the basis of gender identity and expression, a civil right we transgender people in New Hampshire have needed for a long time and could also possibly get this year.
I say kudos to Rep. Butler and all of our state legislators who are working very diligently to advance LGBT rights in our state. We’re moving forward, not backward!
As for Republicans trying to pass a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, it’s inevitable. Republicans, who were once the party that demanded the government stay out of our personal lives, has become the nanny party that wants to make sure we stick to a very rigid quasi-Christian moral code and will try to legislate as much as they can to ensure it. That’s only a step backward if they succeed, which is very unlikely. It was the Democrat majority in our state legislator that gave us the first state civil union law passed in this nation without a court order, and that majority has only strengthened in the most recent election. The Republicans have their work cut out for them if they think their bill will pass.
From the rest of the article comes this excerpt:
“Rep. Jim Splaine, who sponsored the stateâ??s civil unions law, said he believes there will be enough votes to pass his same-sex marriage bill and to block an attempt to amend the constitution.”
