I am blanking on the name of the award right now, but eventually, the MnCSE web site will probably have a page on this, or an announcement about it.  (We need time for some dust to settle.)Who is Ken Hubert?Well, when it comes to the Evolution &#8211; Creationism &#8216;debate&#8217;, Ken is Case Law 101&#8230;<span id="more-2808"></span>This is the opening paragraph of an interview by Randy Moore of Ken Hubert, which is posted on the MnCSE web site (<a href="http://www.mnscience.org/index.php?id=156">here</a>).</p>
<blockquote><p>When classes began at Faribault (Minnesota) High School in the fall of 1997, high school biology teacher Ken Hubert was looking forward to a productive year. However, early in 1998 Ken became concerned that a colleague &#8212; first-year biology teacher Rodney LeVake &#8212; was not teaching evolution as prescribed in the school&#8217;s curriculum. When Ken confronted Rod with his concerns, Ken learned that his concerns were justified&#8211;Rod told Ken, &#8220;I can&#8217;t teach evolution.&#8221;When Rod was later reassigned to a physical science class for refusing to follow the school&#8217;s curriculum, he filed a lawsuit that ended in early 2002 when the U.S. Supreme Court refused, without comment, to hear Rod&#8217;s case.</p></blockquote>
<p>Ken found himself in a situation that a lot of teachers find themselves in.  Ken did two things:  First, he did the right thing (he confronted the problem) then, with a little luck and because right was on his side (which is never enough without the luck.  Oh, and some lawyers&#8230;.) he survived.Teachers, Ken spent four years getting dicked around by creationists so that you don&#8217;t have to.Ken&#8217;s award included a pile of books signed by the authors (like Genie Scott and such).  He also got a standing ovation.  (Well, Amanda and I, we leapt to our feet.)This is from Ken&#8217;s interview, and closely mirrors what he said in discussing his ordeal during a round table discussion held later in the day:</p>
<blockquote><p>Lots of teachers at the high school told me that they supported what the school was doing; they were glad that we were going to fight Rod&#8217;s lawsuit. They understood that teachers shouldn&#8217;t be allowed to teach their own curriculum. Lots of people in the community supported us, but some didn&#8217;t. I&#8217;m sure there were teachers and other people who told Rod that they were happy he was suing the district. I remember getting one letter calling me a Nazi and claiming that the teaching of evolution is responsible for drugs, gangs, Satanism, and suicides.  A parent asked me how I felt about Rod&#8217;s lawsuit. I told her that we were only trying to ensure that teachers taught science in our science classrooms. The parent responded by saying, &#8220;Well, we didn&#8217;t teach biology that way in 1850 and we don&#8217;t have to now.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Makes sense to me.  But staring in 1859 or so, well, that&#8217;s a different story&#8230;.</p>

Karen has taught classes on this approach for teachers&#8217; professional development programs.The species she uses is the Monarch Butterfly.<a href="http:http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/accounts/information/Danaus_plexippus.html"><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/scienceblogs.com/gregladen/wp-content/blogs.dir/472/files/2012/04/i-43aa3685b219a3a899cb18cca4e9fbba-monarch.jpg?w=604" alt="i-43aa3685b219a3a899cb18cca4e9fbba-monarch.jpg" data-recalc-dims="1" /></a>Karen is a world class expert on this insect, and runs a major research project with them.The idea of a single-species approach is that a student learns a great deal about one particular species, to the extent that this species becomes an organizing theme as well as a kind of living mnemonic device for all that is learned throughout the course.  The individual seemingly disconnected aspects of biology and ecology can become seemingly connected by referring back to a single species. If there is something that this one species does not give you that you need to use in your class, there is almost alwasy a way to work it in.<span id="more-2800"></span>Karen suggests taking the approach of working your way down from taxonomically more general to taxonomically more specific.  By working from big picture to small picture there are a lot of opportunities to make interesting evolutionary points, with different opportunities at different levels.At the larger scales, say, &#8220;insect,&#8221; one can talk about patterns of global diversity, and generally, about phylogenetic trees.At a somewhat smaller scale, when comparing across closely related butterflies, one can find examples of Batesian mimicry.  (For the most part, most example of Batesian mimicry are probably in closely related species.  Or at least, there are a lot of good examples at that level.  I have no idea how many species of ants mimic spiders or visa versa &#8230; probably a lot).At the smallest level, of the species, one encounters such things as sexual dimorphsim and, of course, individual variation.Of course, the classic example of &#8220;single species&#8221; pedagogy in biology is any course on human evolution.  This is probably why Karen&#8217;s talk went down real easy with me.Karen went into some detail about experimental work investigating the paradox of the lek (more or less), and measuring heritability in her study specimens.Teachers:  Somewhere in your neighborhood is a University professor with a research project on a locally available species of something that you can bring into the classroom.  I&#8217;m sure these folks are always happy to help. But I will get to all of it, I assure you.  Tonight, I just want to cover part of today&#8217;s Education Symposium (moderated by your&#8217;s truly) &#8230; not all of it at once, thought, as it is kind of complex.If you happen to work for the University of Minnesota or know anyone who does, best to not read this or let anyone know about it.  This is a little to heavy to be spoken of openly.  (Since there are only 11 of you who read my blog, I think we&#8217;ll be safe.)I want to comment briefly on two of the talks, one by PZ Myers and one by Mark Decker.  The other talks in the symposium were excellent, but I want to address them separately.First, to dispel rumors that PZ Myers passed out on he lawn in the middle of the campus;  This is simply not true.  It is true that he had slept only four hours over the previous two and a half days, and had just flown in that morning from Vegas, but he did not pass out on the lawn.  In fact, we were able to wire him up quite nicely. <p>OK, back to the point.</p>
<p>Decker went before Myers and gave an excellent Socratean presentation that utterly shocked the part of the audience that received his message.  I am reluctant to actually report the details of what he said because it is about a conversation very much in process, but I can give you he gist.Imagine this scenario.  You are teaching introductory evolutionary biology in college.  A student in the class approaches you  and says:&#8221;Professor &#8230; look, I&#8217;m a creationist.  I don&#8217;t believe this evolution stuff because it is opposed to my religion.  &#8220;Now, two thoughts occur to you.  Two alternative responses, two alternative strategies.  Here they are:<strong>Plan A: </strong>Tell the student&#8230; &#8220;OK, that&#8217;s fine, I totally  understand and that&#8217;s your thing.  But, this is a class on science.  You know, a large number of scientists are actually religious.  But science is about natural explanations or descriptions, not religious or supernatural explanations for things.  So, when a scientist is working on her or his research, it is imperative to suspend religious &#8216;belief&#8217; and act like an agnostic, at least for the time being.  You need to do that in my class to really get the material.  That is what I&#8217;m asking you to do.&#8221;<strong>Plan B: </strong>Do not attempt to tell the student that s/he needs to make any adjustment at all.  You would be wrong to state or imply that the student should not give a religious belief priority or primacy over the material in the course.  Do not ask the student to suspend a religious perspective while addressing the material (readings labs, etc.) in the course.Mark did the following:  He took this question to a high authority at the University of Minnesota, and he also asked the members of the audience what they thought.  At this biology conference.What do you think people said?   I will not repeat it here but you are more than welcome to say what YOU would do!!!PZ Myer&#8217;s talk was equally radical.  I&#8217;m not going to describe this in any detail, because I have a feeling that he will do so by an by on <a href="http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/">his blog</a>.    What I will tell you is this:  PZ has redesigned the introductory biology course at his school in a very interesting way.  When it comes to evolution, he teaches the controversy.PZ is in part leveraging the fact that the students all know his views because of his reputation and his well known blog.  So this puts any creationoids on the defensive, so he starts off by getting them to relax in various way.  The course starts with logic and philosophy, and spends a pretty large amount of time on this (including critical thinking, etc.)  Maybe two weeks or so.  Then he embraces a discussion of &#8220;the controversies&#8221; and has the students argue the various positions.  (He did not give details here on the pedagogy.)In this way he positions himself as moderator rather than proponent of one position or another, and the students learn.I think it is a fantastic way to teach a college course.  However, I must say that I was shocked at the fact that this critical question was NOT asked of PZ at the end of his talk:  &#8220;How is this supposed to work in High School?&#8221;In a high school setting, there can be problems with &#8220;Teaching the Controversy&#8221; in this way or in any other way.  For one thing, there is actually more required content in a high school class than in a college class, for various reasons, so spending a total of 25 percent of the class on &#8220;thinking&#8221; is not possible (though may be it should be).  (PZ did acknowledge this problem.) In addition, if you have relatively immature HS students debating sensitive topics, things can go badly.  &#8220;So what?&#8221; you say&#8230;Well, if things go badly in a high school class now and then, it may be no big deal in many cases. But if things go badly in a part of the class that is foundational to the rest of the class, as in this case, than one is in trouble.  High school teachers tend to be conservative for a reason.However, I do think this approach can (and should) be adopted for either a Social Studies class or a cross-disciplinary elective in social studies and life science.  Such an effort could lead to working out the kinks and refining the approach to adapt it to the high school context, and possibly to shape it into something that could be used in the biology class.I will try to make my next Evolution 2008 post on Dr. Tatiana&#8217;s sex advice.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/scienceblogs.com/gregladen/wp-content/blogs.dir/472/files/2012/04/i-68efa548cdb44e33126c5936c96fe3ed-evolution_2008.jpg?w=604" alt="i-68efa548cdb44e33126c5936c96fe3ed-evolution_2008.jpg" data-recalc-dims="1" />Continuing with our discussion of the <a href="http://www.cce.umn.edu/conferences/evolution/">Evolution 2008</a> conference, I&#8217;d like to relate at least the essence, as I saw it, of an excellent talk by <a href="http://www.cbs.umn.edu/eeb/faculty/BorrelloMark/">Mark Borrello</a>.I&#8217;ve seen Mark speak at least three times including yesterday, and soon after his talk we continued on the topic in a conversation over lunch and beers, so my comments here are less a summary of Mark&#8217;s talk at the Evolution 2008 conference than a more general reaction to what I believe to be his main points.<img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/scienceblogs.com/gregladen/wp-content/blogs.dir/472/files/2012/04/i-283f125a753886df1095ced6cfeaf735-BorrelloMarkbw.jpg?w=604" alt="i-283f125a753886df1095ced6cfeaf735-BorrelloMarkbw.jpg" data-recalc-dims="1" />Everyone knows that history repeats itself. Or, at least, as per Samuel Clemens, if history does not repeat itself, at least it rhymes.  But more importantly, if we engage in research, theoretical or empirical, we often find that similar work was done in the past.  And this should lead us to wonder why we are still doing it.  And, why we will do it again.  And the answer is very simple:  There are only a few questions.  Very rarely does a new question emerge.  And we ask the same questions again and again, with methods that vary (sometimes only a little) and answers that are sometimes novel and sometimes not.But why would we do that?<span id="more-2789"></span>Because we get something out of it.  Context is content.  The questions remain the same, the methods slowly evolve, the answers vary, but the context is always shifting, and it is actually, quite often, the interaction between the context and the content that makes us sit up and go &#8220;Holy crap, hadn&#8217;t thought of <em>THAT</em> before&#8230;. &#8221; even when <em>THAT</em> has been thought of again and again.I don&#8217;t mean to make it sound boring or fruitless, because it is neither.  Especially to hear Borrello talking about it (&#8216;it&#8217; being scientific research).  In fact, the whole point of Mark&#8217;s talk was to encourage teachers to examine the history behind certain key ideas or findings, the history behind certain research questions, and to bring this history into the classroom.(He gets a percentage &#8230; he is an historian of science.  They have some kind of deal worked out.)Mark presented and discussed one of my favorite topics in evolution:  Darwin&#8217;s drawings of phylogeny.Do you know how close this was?  My old blog (&#8220;<a href="http://gregladen.com/wordpress/">Evolution, not just a theory any more</a>&#8220;) was going to be called &#8220;I Think&#8221; and the logo for my new blog was going to be this bit from one of Darwin&#8217;s notebooks:<img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/scienceblogs.com/gregladen/wp-content/blogs.dir/472/files/2012/04/i-1075406de94e3bc8c5f6d6c0d165ce3e-Darwin_thinks.jpg?w=604" alt="i-1075406de94e3bc8c5f6d6c0d165ce3e-Darwin_thinks.jpg" data-recalc-dims="1" />Look at that.  Darwin writes in his notebook:&#8221;I think&#8221;Then he draws a picture &#8230; this is 1838 mind you &#8230;. he draws a picture of a phylogenetic tree, labels a couple of branches, then writes some notes about it.  I like to think of this as the moment that Evolutionary Theory was born.  But of course it wasn&#8217;t, things are more complex than that (a discussion for another time).  Anyhow, my old blog used to use that graphic as it&#8217;s logo, and almost got that name (as did the blog you are reading now).So Mark showed us this tree, and some other trees, including the one graphic in Darwin&#8217;s <em>Origin,</em> which is also a tree.   This was prelude to a discussion about gradualism vs. punctuated equilibrium &#8230; as answers to the essential question &#8230; &#8220;how does evolution work &#8230; what does it look like over time and across species &#8230;&#8221;   Huxley warned Darwin about Darwin&#8217;s gradualism, saltational (jumping)  evolution emerged anyway, but was put to bed by Ernst Mayr, to be revived later by Eldridge and Gould.  All the time the same question, and really, very similar answers.   (In the sense that these two contrasting patterns of evolution have always had their proponents and their detractors, this still being true.)Mark underscored his point further by pointing out a number of different major seminal research projects that had either been lost in the fog of history, or are preceded by antecedents usually forgotten.For instance, when do you think the first playback experiment was done with primates?  You know, where you play their previously recorded calls for them to hear, to see how they respond &#8230;..When was the first clone produced?  In what year was the first genetic map made?Obviously, these are all trick questions, and since they were posed by an Historian of Science, you can bet that the dates are <em>older than you think&#8230; </em>  But just as importantly, the story that necessarily emerges if one tries to explain each unexpectedly early date is itself relevant and interesting, and in most cases would be absolutely fascinating in unadulterated form to any high school student (especially the story about the first gene map &#8230; wow&#8230;).Let&#8217;s see&#8230; what was the point of Mark&#8217;s talk &#8230; I&#8217;ll check my notes&#8230;  Ah, here it is:<img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/scienceblogs.com/gregladen/wp-content/blogs.dir/472/files/2012/04/i-5b5069ad450fd600c5cf8f56a960484d-context_is_content.jpg?w=604" alt="i-5b5069ad450fd600c5cf8f56a960484d-context_is_content.jpg" data-recalc-dims="1" /></p>

The opening speaker was <a href="http://www.cbs.umn.edu/eeb/faculty/LanyonScott/">Scott Lanyon</a>, director of the <a href="http://www.bellmuseum.org/">Bell Museum of Natural History</a>.  (The Bell hosted this event.)<img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/scienceblogs.com/gregladen/wp-content/blogs.dir/472/files/2012/04/i-360cbb04fb3ca5b4766c7598e92870d3-Scott_Lanyon.jpg?w=604" alt="i-360cbb04fb3ca5b4766c7598e92870d3-Scott_Lanyon.jpg" data-recalc-dims="1" />Scott&#8217;s objective was to outline several areas of evolutionary biology where fundamental changes had occurred over recent years.  This was to provide perspective and food for thought for the Life Sciences teachers attending the event, and Scott was very successful in this effort.In each case, Scott described a similar trope &#8230; &#8220;Not so many years ago, understanding [this or that thing] was thought nearly impossible&#8230;. but today, look what we have&#8230;.&#8221;Specifically, Scott, a bird phylogeny expert, outlined four areas of research corresponding to four major areas of evolutionary biology:<span id="more-2781"></span>1) Phenotype2) Genotype3) Speciation4) History (Phylogeny)Comparing evolutionary thinking of a couple decades ago to the present, the genotype-phenotype one-to-one correspondence has weakened in its explanatory power and is being replaced by more complex yet more realistic models of developmental biology (&#8220;evodevo&#8221;).  To me, this is very interesting because it is an example of science swimming upstream against parsimony &#8230; it turns out that the simplest explanation (a Cartesian gene-trait correspondence) is not correct, and a more subtle, nuanced, and complex set of relationships involving hierarchical effects and emergent properties is correct.  As a firm disbeliever in the &#8220;Law of Parsimony&#8221; as it is usually applied, I like this.Genomics replaces simple conceptions of the genotype.  We have a more holistic understanding of the genome, we understand evolutionary scenarios involving whole genome duplication and other less drastic yet still genome-level evolutionary changes, and so on.  Here I think we are conflating methods (genomics as a method) and evolutionary process (genome duplication) a bit, but Scott&#8217;s point is simple and well taken:  Go back a couple of decades and try to imagine what we could be doing with genetics in 2008, and you couldn&#8217;t.With respect to &#8216;speciation&#8217; &#8230; the diversification of forms, the diversity of life, the disparity produced by evolutionary process &#8230; again, the same theme.  Scott pointed out that we know of approximately 1.7 million species, but estimates suggest there may exist somewhere between 10 and 100 million species.  Go back twenty years or so and you would have seen field biologists starting to confront this reality, especially in certain habitats, almost with a sense of disbelief.  I remember hearing from a colleague just back from visiting an Amazonian research site &#8230; a fogging sample was taken from a large area of rainforest canopy in a previously uninvestigated area to see what percentage of the insect species (which would fall out of the canopy because of the &#8220;fog&#8221; &#8230;.) would be new species.  Five or ten percent would be really cool.So they fogged the canopy, about a thousand species were represented in what came out of the canopy, and the researchers did not recognize any of them.  Probably a few had been described before, but if so, not many.  Totally blew their minds.  And I&#8217;m not exaggerating by more than one order of magnitude (hey, it was a long time ago).Finally, Scott talked about his own field: He&#8217;s a bird phylogeny guy, and he noted, really, two different things.  One is that now, compared to a couple/few decades ago, phylogenies are often seen in connection with evolutionary biology research projects &#8230; so much research is now couched in phylogenetic terms, and this is new.This is incredibly important.  Not only do we increasingly pay attention to phylogenetic context, but methods of study involving the phylogenetic structure of the data are now routinely applied.Also, the scope of phylogenetic studies has changed dramatically. Scott published his first bird phylogeny a few years back (I don&#8217;t think he said exactly when) with something like 10 birds on one phylogenetic tree.  That was actually pretty impressive at the time.  Recently, he co-authored a paper with over 800 species on the tree.  Effectively two orders of magnitude more, and that is not uncommon.  If this trend continues, the birds may cause the trees to collapse!I remember being at a AAAS meeting where Sibly and Alquist gave one of their papers on bird phylogeny.  This was not when they first started out with this business of using DNA to assess relationships, but they had applied some new methodologies and had a &#8220;complete&#8221; tree for birds &#8230; complete in the sense that all major bird groups were represented.  People were pretty excited, it was like a tipping point in the history of science because for the first time a whole symposium at a major meeting was all about phylogeny of birds.  Another symposium at the same meeting addressed human evolution and DNA phylogeny.  But it still was fewer than about 100 birds.  Most of the arguing and fighting (and there was quite a bit) was about mutation rates.Today, phylogenies are routinely used, massive phylogenetic analyses continue to reveal important features of evolutionary pattern and process, and our methods of analysis are very sophisticated.We&#8217;re all still fightin&#8217; about mutation rates, though.</p>
