Some are old, some are new. There is a lot missing from this list, I&#8217;m sure, but the summer is short here in Minnesota and we&#8217;ll be busy with the corn, so there is not much time.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2011\/05\/the_paleolithic_prescription_a.php\">The Paleolithic Prescription: A Program of Diet &#038; Exercise and a Design for Living <\/a> by Eaton, Konner and Shostack. An oldie but a goodie.  Read it as a pragmatic science book rather than a self help guide. <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2011\/04\/bring_your_birding_to_the_next.php\">The Kaufman Field Guide to Advanced Birding (Kaufman Field Guides)<\/a> &#8230; a bird book but not an ID guide.  More like birding theory. If you are not a birder, not for you.  If you are, it is a must-have. <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2011\/03\/death_by_black_hole_and_other.php\">Death by Black Hole: And Other Cosmic Quandaries by Neil deGrasse Tyson<\/a> this is a compendium of NdGT&#8217;s essays and only one of several excellent books by him, but I had to pick one. Well, OK, I also pick <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/159102188X\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=wwwgregladenc-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=217145&#038;creative=399349&#038;creativeASIN=159102188X\">The Sky Is Not the Limit: Adventures of an Urban Astrophysicist<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=wwwgregladenc-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=159102188X&#038;camp=217145&#038;creative=399349\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>, which is essentially an autobiography with many surprising moments.  Oh, and if you&#8217;ve not seen it, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0393337324\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=wwwgregladenc-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=217145&#038;creative=399349&#038;creativeASIN=0393337324\">The Pluto Files: The Rise and Fall of America&#8217;s Favorite Planet<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=wwwgregladenc-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=0393337324&#038;camp=217145&#038;creative=399349\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/> is a must.  At least browse through it. LOL. <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2011\/01\/vaccination_vs_disease_which_i.php\">Deadly Choices: How the Anti-Vaccine Movement Threatens Us All by Paul Offit<\/a> &#8230; Do with this book what Lewis Black suggests to do with a fossil, but for antivaxers instead of creationists.  <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2011\/01\/the_kiss.php\">The Science of Kissing: What Our Lips Are Telling Us by Sheril Kirshenbaum<\/a>  &#8230; also a romantic gift to give to your sweetie.  That&#8217;s what I did.  <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2010\/12\/how_quantum_mechanics_made_liv.php\">The Amazing Story of Quantum Mechanics: A Math-Free Exploration of the Science that Made Our World by Jim Kakalios<\/a> &#8230; All of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/cse?cx=017254414699180528062%3Auyrcvn__yd0&#038;q=kakalios+site%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fscienceblogs.com%2Fgregladen%2F&#038;sa=Search\">Jim&#8217;s stuff<\/a> is entertaining and educational, somehow.  <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2010\/09\/those_were_the_days_when_a_phy.php\">Newton and the Counterfeiter:The Unknown Detective Career of the World&#8217;s Greatest Scientist by Tom Levenson<\/a> &#8230; I had no idea &#8230; Newton, using torture? Well, maybe he did, maybe he didn&#8217;t.  <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2010\/07\/mothers_and_others_by_hrdy_a_r.php\">Mothers and Others: The Evolutionary Origins of Mutual Understanding by Sarah Blaffer Hrdy<\/a> &#8230; a must read for all those interested in behavioral biology. <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0043RT8BI\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=wwwgregladenc-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=217145&#038;creative=399349&#038;creativeASIN=B0043RT8BI\">Bonobo Handshake: A Memoir of Love and Adventure in the Congo by Vanessa Woods<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=wwwgregladenc-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B0043RT8BI&#038;camp=217145&#038;creative=399349\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/> &#8230; you can&#8217;t go wrong with bonobos, but put a brown paper wrapper on it if you take it to the beach. <\/li>\n<li>I have not read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0767928849\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=wwwgregladenc-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=217145&#038;creative=399349&#038;creativeASIN=0767928849\">The Wave: In Pursuit of the Rogues, Freaks and Giants of the Ocean by Susan Casey<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=wwwgregladenc-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=0767928849&#038;camp=217145&#038;creative=399349\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/> but it looks interesting. See also <a href=\"http:\/\/sciencenews.org\/view\/generic\/id\/74610\/title\/Rogue_waves_captured\">this recent bit of rogue wave news<\/a>. <\/li>\n<li>I have not read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0226983358\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=wwwgregladenc-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=217145&#038;creative=399349&#038;creativeASIN=0226983358\">A Planet of Viruses by Carl Zimmer<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=wwwgregladenc-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=0226983358&#038;camp=217145&#038;creative=399349\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/> but all his stuff is good. <\/li>\n<li>I have not read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0674048776\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=wwwgregladenc-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=217145&#038;creative=399349&#038;creativeASIN=0674048776\">The Nesting Season: Cuckoos, Cuckolds, and the Invention of Monogamy by Bernd Heinrich<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=wwwgregladenc-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=0674048776&#038;camp=217145&#038;creative=399349\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/> but if it is good it will be very good. Anybody read it? <\/li>\n<li>Perhaps the best science book of the last few years is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1400052181\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=wwwgregladenc-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=217145&#038;creative=399349&#038;creativeASIN=1400052181\">The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=wwwgregladenc-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=1400052181&#038;camp=217145&#038;creative=399349\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>.  What, you haven&#8217;t read it yet? Just read it. <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0520260120\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=wwwgregladenc-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=217145&#038;creative=399349&#038;creativeASIN=0520260120\">Evolution&#8217;s Rainbow: Diversity, Gender, and Sexuality in Nature and People, With a New Preface by Joan Roughgarden<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=wwwgregladenc-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=0520260120&#038;camp=217145&#038;creative=399349\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/> is the best choice if you&#8217;re heading for P-Town or Fire Island. No, but seriously &#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What am I missing?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m working on my Summer Reading Suggestions: Fiction list but I think I&#8217;ve only read one fiction book since last summer so this may be a short list.  I may ask my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/laden.greg\">facebook friends<\/a> to come up with some suggestions that I&#8217;ll compile.
