{"id":8564,"date":"2010-08-23T19:52:03","date_gmt":"2010-08-23T19:52:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2010\/08\/23\/photos-from-itasca\/"},"modified":"2010-08-23T19:52:03","modified_gmt":"2010-08-23T19:52:03","slug":"photos-from-itasca","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregladen.com\/blog\/2010\/08\/23\/photos-from-itasca\/","title":{"rendered":"Photos from Itasca"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As you know, we just spent a few days at Itasca (see <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2010\/08\/what_i_had_for_brunch_a_trip_t_1.php\">this<\/a> for the meaning of the word &#8220;Itasca&#8221;) where we saw <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2010\/08\/we_walk_among_ducks_in_wolves.php\">some interesting wildlife<\/a>.  I thought I &#8216;d share a few photos of the trip.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nWe were at Itasca because Amanda volunteered to help out with the orientation for new biology grad students, by giving a demonstration of what she does in the Dave Thomas lab.  I did not see the demonstration but I think it had something to do with reanimating tissues.  Here&#8217;s a photograph of the entrance way to the research station, which is all most people can see because you are not allowed in there. For instance, here is a beaver dam and the path through the pond that the beavers maintain through regular use:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/472\/files\/2012\/04\/i-e23cd905f378eabe437753c52bd5a7b4-BeaverPathFromLodgeItasca.jpg?w=604\" alt=\"i-e23cd905f378eabe437753c52bd5a7b4-BeaverPathFromLodgeItasca.jpg\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not posting the photo of wolf dung here, but I will show you this bit of spoor:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/472\/files\/2012\/04\/i-349af1c101932263e0a2e4115dffb578-itasca_ground_spoor.jpg?w=604\" alt=\"i-349af1c101932263e0a2e4115dffb578-itasca_ground_spoor.jpg\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230; which prompted us to look up and see this &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/472\/files\/2012\/04\/i-4f6187e285db6f199918d9141bd4536d-itasca_woodpecker_nest.jpg?w=604\" alt=\"i-4f6187e285db6f199918d9141bd4536d-itasca_woodpecker_nest.jpg\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And that isn&#8217;t the only woodpecker spoor one sees in this park.  In fact, one of the most common categories of birds we saw was woodpecker or woodpecker like.  Here is what happens when woodpeckers go wild:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\"
