Where is the field marshal? The girls of Egypt are here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(The reference to &#8220;Field Marshal&#8221; ist ot FM Mohamed Hussein Tantawi.)<\/p>\n<p>This is the lasrgest and most significant demonstration by women in Egypt in modern times, by a large margin.<!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The protest\u2019s scale stunned even feminists here. In Egypt\u2019s stiffly patriarchal culture, previous attempts to organize women\u2019s events in Tahrir Square during this year\u2019s protests almost always fizzled or, in one case in March, ended in the physical harassment of a small group of women by a larger crowd of men.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was amazing the number of women that came out from all over the place,\u201d said Zeinab Abul-Magd, a historian who has studied women\u2019s activism here. \u201cI expected fewer than 300.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/12\/21\/world\/middleeast\/violence-enters-5th-day-as-egyptian-general-blames-protesters.html\">nyt<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Clashes between demonstrators and police over the last five days have killed 14 or more people.<\/p>\n<p>During the protest, the Egyptian Military Council turned out a statement of regret over violations to women. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The council expressed \u201cdeep regret to the great women of Egypt\u201d and affirmed \u201cits respect and total appreciation\u201d for women and their right to protest and take part in political life.
