{"id":5270,"date":"2009-04-29T07:23:05","date_gmt":"2009-04-29T07:23:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2009\/04\/29\/sbling-sandy-has-idd-source-of\/"},"modified":"2009-04-29T07:23:05","modified_gmt":"2009-04-29T07:23:05","slug":"sbling-sandy-has-idd-source-of","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregladen.com\/blog\/2009\/04\/29\/sbling-sandy-has-idd-source-of\/","title":{"rendered":"Sbling Sandy Has ID&#8217;d &#8216;Source&#8217; of Swine Flu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Seriously.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Sandra Porter of Discovering Biology in a Digital World provides evidence that &#8220;the California outbreak might be the same strain that caused an outbreak in 2007 at an Ohio country fair.&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/digitalbio\/2009\/04\/did_the_california_h1n1_swine.php\"><br \/>\nWhat a nice piece of research and blogging. <\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATED: <\/strong> There is some interesting discussion on Sandy&#8217;s blog about the validity and meaning of this finding, and <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/aetiology\/2009\/04\/swine_flu--deja_vu_all_over_ag.php\">Tara Smith has further discussion here. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>I also want to be more specific about one thing:  When I say the word &#8220;Source&#8221; of Swine Flu in the head line, I mean &#8220;phylogenetic source&#8221; &#8230; the actual source of a person&#8217;s case of swine flu is another person (or swine) and the ultimate source is the evolution of viruses.  I could have switched this to &#8220;origin&#8221; but that would be even more geographically meaningful (without meaning for that to be the case) and I could have used the word &#8220;ancestor&#8221; but that is misleading because of the way viuruses &#8220;evolve.&#8221;  So I&#8217;m leaving it as source, and I refer you to<a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/digitalbio\/2009\/04\/did_the_california_h1n1_swine.php#comment-1597605\"> this question about geography<\/a>, which I have asked and which I&#8217;m sure will be answered soon enough.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Seriously.
