{"id":27362,"date":"2009-10-20T16:03:31","date_gmt":"2009-10-20T16:03:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2009\/10\/20\/threats-against-obama\/"},"modified":"2009-10-20T16:03:31","modified_gmt":"2009-10-20T16:03:31","slug":"threats-against-obama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregladen.com\/blog\/2009\/10\/20\/threats-against-obama\/","title":{"rendered":"Threats Against Obama"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Continuing on with our theme of anti-Obama wackaloonery, including<a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2009\/09\/a_trail_of_shame_racism_and_th.php\"> the inherent racism<\/a> involved in that, there is not additional evidence that there are indeed more death threats against our President than usual.<\/p>\n<p>From the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/nation\/washington\/articles\/2009\/10\/18\/secret_service_under_strain_as_leaders_face_more_threats\/?page=1\">Boston Globe<\/a>:<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The unprecedented number of death threats against President Obama, a rise in racist hate groups, and a new wave of antigovernment fervor threaten to overwhelm the US Secret Service, according to government officials and reports, raising new questions about the 144-year-old agency&#8217;s overall mission.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is leading some to consider the possibility that the Secret Service drop its financial crime-fighting mission to focus on protection.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Secret Service, long under the Treasury Department but now part of the Department of Homeland Security, was established in 1865 to thwart counterfeiting, a focus that has expanded to include a host of electronic and financial crimes.<\/p>\n<p>Its mission soon expanded to investigating the Ku Klux Klan and conducting counterespionage operations during the Spanish-American War and World War I.<\/p>\n<p>The job of protecting presidents started in 1894 with Grover Cleveland, who was guarded part time. That role expanded after the assassination of William McKinley in 1901, and it became a crime to threaten the president in 1917. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We could save a lot of money if <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/politics\/michelle_bachmann\/\">Republicans<\/a> would stop telling their constituents to <a href=\"http:\/\/quichemoraine.com\/2009\/09\/ostracize-josh\/\">use violence<\/a> to advance their conservative causes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Continuing on with our theme of anti-Obama wackaloonery, including the inherent racism involved in that, there is not additional evidence that there are indeed more death threats against our President than usual.
