{"id":27291,"date":"2009-10-09T14:02:16","date_gmt":"2009-10-09T14:02:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2009\/10\/09\/los-angeles-venue-cancels-inte\/"},"modified":"2009-10-09T14:02:16","modified_gmt":"2009-10-09T14:02:16","slug":"los-angeles-venue-cancels-inte","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregladen.com\/blog\/2009\/10\/09\/los-angeles-venue-cancels-inte\/","title":{"rendered":"Los Angeles Venue Cancels Intelligent Design Film"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You&#8217;ll recall that it was <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2009\/10\/intelligent_design_documentary.php\">recently reported<\/a> that the Californial Science Center, which is loosely affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution, had planned a screening of &#8220;Darwin&#8217;s Dilemma: The Mystery of the Cambrian Fossil Record&#8221; which is apparently a creationist documentary.<\/p>\n<p>Well, now, the venue has cancelled the showing and the ID people are all lathered up about it.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The group claims the cancellation was an act of censorship, made after the center was pressured by the Smithsonian Institution, but the center chalked it up to a contract issue, without elaborating. <\/p>\n<p>Coined &#8220;The Darwin Debates: A Forum for Dialogue,&#8221; the nonprofit American Freedom Alliance had planned to premier a new Illustra Media documentary, &#8220;Darwin&#8217;s Dilemma: The Mystery of the Cambrian Explosion,&#8221; at the California Science Center on Oct. 25.<\/p>\n<p>The Los Angeles-based alliance describes itself as a &#8220;nonpolitical, nonpartisan, movement of concerned Americans which identifies threats to western civilization.&#8221; Those threats, according to the group include &#8220;the Islamic penetration of Europe&#8221; and &#8220;the growth of radical environmentalism.&#8221; <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Right.  Non provit non partisan groups rarely form in relation to threats to Western Civilization. Those are usually White Supremacist groups or Religious Fundies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2007\/11\/john_west_can_play_the_violin.php\">John West<\/a> has chimed in:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I think this is an outrageous example of censorship and ideological discrimination,&#8221; West said. &#8220;The thing about a contractual dispute is just a pretext and it&#8217;s bogus. This really should be disturbing to anyone who believes in free speech.&#8221; <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I agree with West. It is bogus.  But not nearly as bogus as John West, Intelligent Design, and this stupid film.  Bottom line:  Somebody, some staffer, at the California Science Center is either  creationist or simply made a huge mistake.
