{"id":26597,"date":"2009-06-09T07:49:04","date_gmt":"2009-06-09T07:49:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2009\/06\/09\/shell-folds-in-nigerian-killin\/"},"modified":"2009-06-09T07:49:04","modified_gmt":"2009-06-09T07:49:04","slug":"shell-folds-in-nigerian-killin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregladen.com\/blog\/2009\/06\/09\/shell-folds-in-nigerian-killin\/","title":{"rendered":"Shell Folds in Nigerian Killings Case"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>Royal Dutch Shell has agreed a $15.5m (\u00c2\u00a39.7m) out-of-court settlement in a case accusing it of complicity in human rights abuses in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>It was brought by relatives of nine anti-oil campaigners, including author Ken Saro-Wiwa, who were hanged in 1995 by Nigeria&#8217;s then military rulers.<\/p>\n<p>The oil giant strongly denies any wrongdoing and says the payment is part of a &#8220;process of reconciliation&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/africa\/8090493.stm\">bbc<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Human rights experts around the world generally agree that Shell was in fact involved in the killing of these people.<\/p>\n<p>The trial was about to start next week.
