{"id":24911,"date":"2011-03-16T21:55:52","date_gmt":"2011-03-16T21:55:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2011\/03\/16\/a-glowing-irony\/"},"modified":"2011-03-16T21:55:52","modified_gmt":"2011-03-16T21:55:52","slug":"a-glowing-irony","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregladen.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/16\/a-glowing-irony\/","title":{"rendered":"A glowing irony"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I write this, I&#8217;m told that there are eleven water cannon vehicles heading to the disaster-stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, to attempt to cool down nuclear material that is exposed and exuding (I dare not use the word &#8220;leaking&#8221; lest I be thought an alarmist) radiation at a rate that seems to be as alarming to the engineers and nuclear experts on the scene as it is assuaging to the arm-chair nuclear engineers in the US and elsewhere who are telling us that Fukushima is no more dangerous than eating a seedless grape.<\/p>\n<p>The following conversation was heard in the Japanese Police Department&#8217;s motor vehilce shop where the water cannon vehicles are kept.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What are you doing?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m arming these water cannon vehicles.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What for?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The police have been ordered to take these 11 vehicles out.  They need to be ready immediately.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What are they use for?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This:&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/watercannon.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/472\/files\/2012\/04\/i-ef5733543a5d702c0237e99d6f3b73bc-watercannon-thumb-500x340-62764.jpg?w=604\" alt=\"i-ef5733543a5d702c0237e99d6f3b73bc-watercannon-thumb-500x340-62764.jpg\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We use the water cannon on protestors.  Government bought several new water cannons during the big protests here several years ago.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What were the protestors protesting?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The New Nuclear Power Plants&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Good thing there were a LOT of protesters!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Why?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So that they bought a lot of water cannons.
