{"id":22310,"date":"2016-03-25T13:27:43","date_gmt":"2016-03-25T18:27:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/?p=22310"},"modified":"2016-03-25T13:27:43","modified_gmt":"2016-03-25T18:27:43","slug":"which-senate-seats-will-switch-to-democratic-in-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregladen.com\/blog\/2016\/03\/25\/which-senate-seats-will-switch-to-democratic-in-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"Which Senate Seats Will Switch to Democratic In 2016?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m trying to figure out how many Senate seats, and which ones, will switch from Republican to Democratic in November 2016.<\/p>\n<p>At present, 54 Senator caucus with the Republicans, and 46 caucus with the Democrats (two of those are Independant).<\/p>\n<p>We should be shooting for a good majority of 61, just to be safe.  That means fifteen Republicans have to go, to result in a 39 to 61 mix.  To get a simple majority, only five Republicans have to be replaced, to produce a 49 to 51 mix. So, we should be working for replacing fifteen but hoping to replace at least five.<\/p>\n<p>A perusal of The Internet provides a list of Republicans and open seats that seem to have a chance of a Democratic takeover.  (Importantly and worth noting, not many Democrats are at risk, but Michael Bennet of Colorado may be. Also worth noting is that Harry Reid&#8217;s seat in Nevada seems more likely to go GOP, according to some sources).<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the list:<\/p>\n<p>Arizona: John McCain. Challenged by Ann Kirkpatrick<br \/>\nArkansas: John Boozman. Challenged by Conner Eldridge<br \/>\nCalifornia: Open Seat. Kamala Harris<br \/>\nFlorida: Open Seat. Alan Grayson<br \/>\nIllinois: Mark Kirk. Challenged by Tammy Duckworth<br \/>\nIowa: Charles Grassley. Challenged by Patty Judge<br \/>\nKentucky: Rand Paul. Challenged by Adam Edleen<br \/>\nMaryland: Open seat? Donna Edwards<br \/>\nMissouri: Roy Blunt. Challenged by Jaoon Kander<br \/>\nNevada: Open Seat. Catherine Cortez Masto<br \/>\nNew Hampshire: Kelly Ayotte. Challenged by Maggie Hassan<br \/>\nNorth Carolina: Richard Burr. Challenged by Deborah Ross<br \/>\nOhio: Rob Portman. Challenged by Ted Strickland<br \/>\nPennsylvania: Patrick Toomey. No challenger yet<br \/>\nWisconsin: Ron Johnson. Challenged by Russ Feingold<\/p>\n<p>So, what&#8217;s missing? What&#8217;s wrong with this list?
