{"id":16942,"date":"2013-06-13T10:19:48","date_gmt":"2013-06-13T15:19:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/?p=16942"},"modified":"2013-06-13T10:19:48","modified_gmt":"2013-06-13T15:19:48","slug":"can-you-patent-dna","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregladen.com\/blog\/2013\/06\/13\/can-you-patent-dna\/","title":{"rendered":"Can you patent DNA?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>No. Not if it is natural.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In a decision that could have broad-reaching effects on the future of science and medicine, the Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that:<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 &#8220;A naturally occurring DNA segment is a product of nature and not patent eligible merely because it has been isolated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 But, synthetically created &#8220;strands of nucleotides known as composite DNA (cDNA)&#8221; are &#8220;patent eligible&#8221; because they do not occur naturally.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/thetwo-way\/2013\/06\/13\/191283148\/natural-dna-cannot-be-patented-supreme-court-rules?sc=nl&#038;cc=brk-20130613-1053\">SOURCE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our system of patents is badly broken, I think.
