This is normal, but bee keepers maintain that losses of about 15 percent or less are &#8220;acceptable.&#8221;  I don&#8217;t know what the logical or empirical basis for that number is, however.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, <a href=\"http:\/\/beeinformed.org\/2013\/05\/winter-loss-survey-2012-2013\/\">the results of a report that surveys bee keepers in the US came out<\/a>, and the total loss rate over the 2012\/2013 winter was 31.1%.  That&#8217;s a lot more than last year&#8217;s loss rate, but within the range of variation of loss over the last few years, as shown on this graph provided by &#8220;bee informed&#8221;:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16564\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16564\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/files\/2013\/05\/winter_loss__2013-Fig-1-300x259.png?resize=300%2C259\" alt=\"Honey bee colony loss rate.\" width=\"300\" height=\"259\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16564\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16564\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Honey bee colony loss rate.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This is not exactly the same thing as Colony Collapse Disorder, but overwintering loss is a different measure than overall colony loss.
