{"id":15719,"date":"2013-02-02T12:44:21","date_gmt":"2013-02-02T18:44:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/?p=15719"},"modified":"2013-02-02T12:44:21","modified_gmt":"2013-02-02T18:44:21","slug":"the-superbowl-and-god","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregladen.com\/blog\/2013\/02\/02\/the-superbowl-and-god\/","title":{"rendered":"The Superbowl and God"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Public Religion Research Institute has conducted a poll about the Superbowl  They found:<\/p>\n<p>27% of Americans believe that God plays a role in determining which team winds a sporting event.<\/p>\n<p>53% of Americans believe that god rewards athletes who have faith with good health and success<\/p>\n<p>42% of Americans don&#8217;t think that those 53% of Americans are correct.<\/p>\n<p>By religion, there is variation in the percentage of people who believe that god determines the outcome of sporting events, or that god rewards athletes of faith. They have a graph:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/files\/2013\/02\/God-on-the-Field1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/files\/2013\/02\/God-on-the-Field1.jpg?resize=477%2C654\" alt=\"God and the Superbowl, by religious affiliation\" width=\"477\" height=\"654\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15720\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>50% of Americans are fine with athletes making public shows of their religiosity during a sporting event.  An amazingly low 4% don&#8217;t approve.  Which is funny, because every single person I know disapproves of this, religious or otherwise. I suspect this may be the way the question was asked (in this poll, 45% don&#8217;t think it matters).<\/p>\n<p>And now, for the scary bit, the part that proves that most Americans are <em>not<\/em> patriots:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Nearly 9-in-10 (89%) Republicans agree that public high schools should be allowed to sponsor prayer before football games, compared to more than three-quarters (77%) of independents and nearly 7-in-10 (68%) Democrats.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Are those same people also against due process, freedom of speech, and the right to own a firearm? I think not. Makes no sense.
