{"id":10576,"date":"2012-01-16T11:34:10","date_gmt":"2012-01-16T11:34:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2012\/01\/16\/climate-change-denialism-sprea\/"},"modified":"2017-12-06T19:13:20","modified_gmt":"2017-12-07T01:13:20","slug":"climate-change-denialism-sprea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregladen.com\/blog\/2012\/01\/16\/climate-change-denialism-sprea\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate Change Denialism Spreading in US Public Education Related Proposals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is no longer the case that science teachers and concerned parents only need to worry about creationists invading US classrooms, via personal intrusion (by parents, <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2010\/09\/what_to_do_about_bible-thumpin.php\">students<\/a>, or <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2010\/09\/parents_is_your_childs_teacher.php\">creationist  teachers<\/a>) or by <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2011\/12\/crazy_anti-evolution_bills_in.php\">legislation<\/a> or regulation.  Increasingly climate change denialism is being shoved into science classes by the usual nefarious forces.<\/p>\n<p>This is not really new.  &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2008\/04\/academic_freedom_bills_on_talk.php\">Academic Freedom<\/a>&#8221; bills in many states over the last decade or so were introduced to try to force college professors to shut up about climate change.  In the college setting, I&#8217;ve had about the same level of resistance to global warming as to evolution, if not more. But as Neela Banerjee points out, we may be nearing a flash point in American science education:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Texas and Louisiana have introduced education standards that require educators to teach climate change denial as a valid scientific position. South Dakota and Utah passed resolutions denying climate change. Tennessee and Oklahoma also have introduced legislation to give climate change skeptics a place in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>In May, a school board in Los Alamitos, Calif., passed a measure, later rescinded, identifying climate science as a controversial topic that required special instructional oversight.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And it goes on and on. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/nationworld\/nation\/la-na-climate-change-school-20120116,0,2808837.story\">Read the rest of that article in the LA Times here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We are expecting some interesting news any moment now from the<a href=\"http:\/\/ncse.com\/\"> National Center for Science Education<\/a> regarding their increasing efforts to address the issue of climate change denailism. Watch for that.
