{"id":10547,"date":"2012-01-07T10:13:58","date_gmt":"2012-01-07T10:13:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2012\/01\/07\/what-kind-of-country-messes-wi\/"},"modified":"2012-01-07T10:13:58","modified_gmt":"2012-01-07T10:13:58","slug":"what-kind-of-country-messes-wi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregladen.com\/blog\/2012\/01\/07\/what-kind-of-country-messes-wi\/","title":{"rendered":"What kind of country messes with Internet Freedoms?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052970203513604577142713916386248.html\">Iran is cracking down on Internet Freedom:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In the most sweeping move, Iran issued regulations giving Internet cafes 15 days to install security cameras, start collecting detailed personal information on customers and document users&#8217; online footprints.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalpost.com\/dispatch\/news\/regions\/europe\/spain\/120105\/spain-sopa-law-passes-after-pressure-us-ambassador-alan-so\">Spain passes new Internet &#8220;Piracy Law&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>United States Ambassador Alan Solomont put pressure on Spain&#8217;s outgoing president, Jos\u00c3\u00a9 Luis Rodr\u00c3\u00adguez Zapatero, to pass a tough new internet piracy law, according to the Guardian.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter obtained by the Spanish newspaper El Pais and quoted by the Guardian, Solomont threatened &#8220;retaliation action&#8221; if Spain did not move quickly to pass the Sinde law, named after minister of culture \u00c3\u0081ngeles Gonz\u00c3\u00a1lez-Sinde.<\/p>\n<p>The Sinde Law was passed on Jan 3&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/publicknowledge.org\/e-parasite-stop-online-piracy-act?gclid=CI7C_dOavq0CFcEUKgoduROB_Q\">The US is poised to implement new restrictions on internet activity, SOPA, with serious consequences:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If SOPA or PIPA\/ ProtectIPwere to become law, there is a long list of reasons why it would threaten the functioning, freedom, and economic potential of the Internet, but here are PK&#8217;s main concerns:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>By short-circuiting the legal system, it gives rightsholders a fast-track to shutting down websites.<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li>By creating conflicts between &#8220;DNS&#8221; servers, it would make you more vulnerable to hackers, identity theft, and cyberattacks.<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li>By sanctioning government interference with the internet, it would make the internet more censored, akin to that of China and Syria.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To make it worse, SOPA and PIPA \/ ProtectIP are ineffective. So the question is, is an ineffective bill worth the risk of damaging free speech and the functioning of the Internet?
