But Jean was Jeanne, a female, who at first pretended to be a man, then later changed her story slightly to being a Eunuch, to stay on board after others had become suspicious of her gender identity.  She was actually married to her boss, who presumably knew her secret.<\/p>\n<p>Very recently, Glynis Ridley wrote a biography of her life (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0307463532\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=wwwgregladenc-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=0307463532\">The Discovery of Jeanne Baret: A Story of Science, the High Seas, and the First Woman to Circumnavigate the Globe<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=wwwgregladenc-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=0307463532\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>), and more recently, scientist Eric Tepe has named a recently discovered plant after her.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.themarysue.com\/female-explorer-finally-gets-her-due\/\">Jill Pantozzi at Mary Sue has the story in detail, illustrated.<\/a>  I think it is entirely appropriate and very cool at the new plant is a member of the Solanaceae family.
