{"id":10361,"date":"2011-11-11T19:27:04","date_gmt":"2011-11-11T19:27:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2011\/11\/11\/western-browsing-rhino-is-no-m\/"},"modified":"2011-11-11T19:27:04","modified_gmt":"2011-11-11T19:27:04","slug":"western-browsing-rhino-is-no-m","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregladen.com\/blog\/2011\/11\/11\/western-browsing-rhino-is-no-m\/","title":{"rendered":"Western Browsing Rhino Is No More"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This refers to a subspecies of &#8220;Black Rhino&#8221; also known as the &#8220;browsing rhino.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Western Black Rhino of Africa was declared officially extinct Thursday by a leading conservation group.<\/p>\n<p>The International Union for Conservation of Nature said that two other subspecies of rhinoceros were close to meeting the same fate.<\/p>\n<p>The Northern White Rhino of central Africa is now &#8220;possibly extinct&#8221; in the wild and the Javan Rhino &#8220;probably extinct&#8221; in Vietnam, after poachers killed the last animal there in 2010.<br \/>\nA small but declining population survives on the Indonesian island of Java.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/45236688\/ns\/world_news-world_environment\/t\/africas-western-black-rhino-declared-extinct\/?fb_ref=.TrvUYh0Alox.like&#038;fb_source=home_oneline#.Tr279c3uWY2\">msnbc<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Black rhinos are fairly aggressive towards humans.  I knew one who was hand reared and very friendly &#8230; you could and feed it and pet it and stuff.  It lived at a non-profit\/private reserve and tourists could park in the nearby lot and go over and see this rhino, as well as a white rhino also hand reared.<\/p>\n<p>Last time I was there both rhinos were gone.  The white rhino had been released into the wild and had started her own family.  <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/gregladen\/2010\/05\/mother_and_daughter_white_rhin.php\">Here&#8217;s a picture I took of her<\/a> when I caught up to her.  (Which wasn&#8217;t hard, white rhinos are easy to find since they like open country where grass grows.)<\/p>\n<p>The black rhino had been shot.  One day he unexpectedly burst through the fence and went on a rampage.
