Remember the question of mixing church ad state in Old Dixie? It apears that the City Council of Bay Minette, where people who committed low level offenses were to be given the option of messing with the law or having the whole thing just “go away” if they went to church for a year, are slowing down their rush into the abyss. They have asked the Alabama attorney general’s opinion first.

When the police chief first proposed the idea to the city council and word got out, there was quite a fuss, and the ACLU sent one of their magic letters to the leaders of the city. That, apparently, made them think. Twice. Which is apparently a lot more than they had done in some time.

Mayor Jamie Tillery defended the alternative sentencing plan and said church attendance was just one of the “menu of options” that would be available to the offenders. Other penalties include jail time, fines and community service, she said, that could be offered by the municipal court judge.

So, now, all eyes on the AG.

Details here.
