The Republican goal is to turn the US into a sea of Third World humanity with the supply chain ever broken, with a small wealthy and somewhat larger and less wealthy ex-patriot-esque community living behind walls in some serious priv. That is what Republicans always wanted, that is what they are finally getting.

Those who think the Republicans like the vote to be fair are unaware of, or ignoring this:

Voting rights advocates face an uphill battle in challenging these maps in court. In 2019, the US supreme court said there was nothing federal courts could do to stop partisan gerrymandering.

Redistricting litigation often takes years to move its way through the court, allowing lawmakers to get at least one election, and often many more, conducted under district lines that may later get struck down.

In the meantime, the effects are insidious. When politicians know their seat is safe, they no longer have to worry about competition from the opposing party or concern themselves with reaching out to the other party’s voters.

Instead, they become more interested in appealing to their own base and fending off challengers from within their own party. It makes politics more extreme, and contributes to extreme polarization.

I will have to re-read it; there is a lot in there.

Last week I found a video that asks, "Is Africa the next China?" — or on the splash screen, more cogently, "Is the African economy going to explode?" The 16-minute video doesn't give a definitive answer, but suggests it is likely.

This is all Trump’s fault. And the Republicans. By ripping apart as many systems as they could, and by encouraging rather than fighting the Covid pandemic, they damaged or broke all the things that matter to most of the people, while leaving the rich intact.

And Reagan's legacy. He pushed many of the same buttons but had a few things against him.

- there was no sympathetic social media willing to carry his message the way FB and twitter (and others) did for trump
- his republican party had racism as a core value but they weren't able to leverage it. After the country elected Obama the right was outraged that a black man and his family could use the front door to the White House, and trump and his ilk leveraged that outrage amazingly well -- they still are: as an example take the laws designed to eliminate access to voting by the elderly, the poor, and minority groups that have been passed and that keep getting mentioned. The "election was stolen" bullshit springs from this

So yes, the modern republican party leadership and its members are a huge threat to democracy and civil rights. If there were a a liberal press willing to point that out it would be a good thing -- but there isn't one.
