I contend that anyone who wasn’t stupid (as in lacking normal intelligence, foolish, irrational) would not have told the lies that would inevitably be shown to be lies. And he would have done the things that the medical experts (and common sense) said were necessary to limit the virus’s effects as much as possible rather than undercutting and subverting such actions. If he had done so, the U. S. wouldn’t lead the world in infection and deaths and he would have been a hero rather than the new world standard for incompetence.

Trump is both a national disgrace and a national embarrassment. However, to his base, he can do no wrong no matter what he says or does.
