"If Biden (and even Sanders) were to hang around for a few months yet then Trump has less time to establish a false narrative about the eventual Democratic candidate, and that will be to the advantage of the Dems. "

I think you are right on target there. My opinion is that Obama would not have won his first term if the GOP had had the time to prepare for him that they had for Hillary Clinton. Someone once said about anti-evolution creationists something like: they can com up with more damn nonsense in ten minutes that can be refuted in ten weeks. It fits the modern GOP just as well (in fact there's a lot of overlap). Don't give them the right target.

I have a lot of sympathy for Sanders but his time has passed. I have a modicum of sympathy for Biden, but his time has definitely passed. However, Biden lives rent-free in Trump's head and I was hoping that he'd stick in the race until the eleventh hour before sailing into the sunset, because Trump's fixation with him means that he spends less time white-anting Warren and the other high-quality candidates.

If Biden (and even Sanders) were to hang around for a few months yet then Trump has less time to establish a false narrative about the eventual Democratic candidate, and that will be to the advantage of the Dems. If Biden is the person chosen he may even win, but he'd be damaged goods and the Democratic party would suffer in the long run, possibly for decades, for having chosen him.

Warren, Harris, and Booker are each strong characters who would help to pull the US through the soul-destroying period of Trump, and they are what's needed to drag the country into a better position to recover for the remainder of the 21st century its currently-lost standing that it had during the 20th century.

Pete Buttigieg is a credbile alternative but half the nation is still living in the 18th century and are simply not ready for an openly gay leader. Not that Australia is any better - we had to keep our first gay prime minister in the closet for him to win. But at least both sides of politics and the media had the decency in those times to keep privacy matters private: it wouldn't happen today...
