I have here a copy of the 1982 edition of <a href="https://www.amazon.com/ATMOSPHERE-WEATHER-CLIMATE-University-paperback/dp/0416336906" rel="nofollow">'Atmosphere, Weather & Climate' by Roger G Barry and Richard J Chorey</a>

which on page 333 Chapter 8, C 2 Short-term fluctuations puts ideas together:

"Remarkably, the causes of observed climate changes during the last few centuries....The key to these atmospheric variations must be linked to the heat balance of the earth-atmosphere system ..."

I agree that Broeker had nailed it his warnings about prodding the beast went unheeded by those with the influence to do something.

As politically events across the globe take a decided downturn with a strengthening of right wing even fascist grip on the zeitgeist I am not sanguine about humans getting to grips RSN (Real Soon Now) with the multiple wicked problems we have created.

Edit function tested, Brilliant.

Broeker nailed it, didn't he? Not bad at all for 1975.

Yes indeed, and note that both terms are used there.

As a rule, in science, subtract a few years from anything the ngram viewer gives you. Wally's article is in a peer reviewed journal, not covered by that Google database. You need to wait for the book, which is not as timely!

The first directly relevant scholarly title I know of nicely encompasses this. It's Dr. Broeker's "Climatic Change: Are We on the Brink of a Pronounced Global Warming?"

http://science.sciencemag.org/content/189/4201/460

Abstract:

"If man-made dust is unimportant as a major cause of climatic change, then a strong case can be made that the present cooling trend will, within a decade or so, give way to a pronounced warming induced by carbon dioxide. By analogy with similar events in the past, the natural climatic cooling which, since 1940, has more than compensated for the carbon dioxide effect, will soon bottom out. Once this happens, the exponential rise in the atmospheric carbon dioxide content will tend to become a significant factor and by early in the next century will have driven the mean planetary temperature beyond the limits experienced during the last 1000 years."

That was published in August, 1975, in "Science".

I think the late Dr. Stephen Schneider would have agreed with your version. He was involved in the formation of the Intergovernmental Panel — which was not named the IPGW when it was formed in 1988.

Frank Luntz's well-known memo was not written until mid-2002.
