IMHO perhaps the greatest challenge facing all democracies now it the information bubbles that have been developed and cultivated. These allow corporations to drive the conversation based on what people see and hear in the kinds of media they trust. The lack of challenge to these narratives (inside of the bubble) mean that most people neither consider any alternative explanations, nor attempt to consider the information from other perspectives. These bubbles are actively cultivated and reinforced by media networks and social media platforms.
People listening to/watching FOX commentators truly believe that they are hearing the truth, just as much as people watching CNN or MSNBC. They regard a challenge from someone outside the bubble as an aggressor, no matter how polite, well intentioned, or factually correct. Politicians lie because they know that their side of the media will not turn traitor on the tribe.
Until this changes, it will be impossible to return to genuine considered democracy, but instead we have a kind of tribal winner-takes all system of rotating (well, unless the gerrymandering is successful) oligarchies.

Side question: Any thoughts on what the fake "revelation and investigation" about Mueller that was developed by Trump butt-boy Jacob Wohl will do to the credibility of the anti-Mueller crowd?

It is the president of the United States and his loosely affiliated gang of Republican thugs and faux news commentators.

Indeed, and the fact that the racists and other despicable people who've been hiding (and welcomed) in the Republican party since the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights passed are now feeling free to come out and act out needs to be laid at the feet of the people you name as well. (One of the most recent cases: Spokane Republican Matt Shea and his "Biblical Basis for War", which is essentially a rant about the need to kill people who do not buy into his biblical basis for arguments against abortion, homosexuality, etc. The Republican organization there has refused to speak out against him.)

Of course, there is the statement that people who oppose Republicans should no longer be civil to them until the political climate has reversed. That's far worse than the actions/statements of Trump and his minions (at least according to folks like rickA and others).

At the same time, over a dozen individuals, legally and justifiably publicly critical of Trump and his administration, were sent pipe bombs in an explicit effort to suppress that criticism and support Donald Trump.

Yet we have a good number people here in W MIchigan who feel the bomb thing was a hoax. As we've seen numerous times, facts don't matter to Trump supporters.

The Tree of Life killer is said to have not liked Trump. Doesn’t matter. Conspiracy theorists, supported by and supportive of Trump, laid out the problem. Jews of means were funding a caravan of killer migrants who would swarm over the Mexican border at any time. That killer went after a special group of Jews, those most closely involved with helping immigrants. That was a call for active hate by Trump converted to a hail of bullets from an assault rifle available due to the incessant activities of the Republican NRA.

Republicans have been blowing the racism/bigotry/people who aren't white are going to kill all of us decent people horn for decades, with the strongest kickoff of the strategy due to Reagan. The nearly 40 years of (false) accusations about black on white crime, serious crime waves due to immigration, as well as the disinformation campaigns against the Clintons and Soros have finally come out in the open and begun paying yuge dividends to the right.

Some will spit hairs. ...

Yup, and claim that Black Lives Matter is a terrorist organization, that the Democratic party is "far left" (they are actually at the position of the traditional Republican party, and the Republican Party is approach the far right extremes of the Nazis), etc. The safest thing to do is realize that anything Trump, Cruz, Ryan, et.al. says or does is based on stoking the flames of racism and bigotry, and work for the opposite.
