Lot of projecting of racism there. Here is the Democrats twice and perhaps future presidential candidate:

Things are ridiculously polarized.

The other contributing factor, probably almost as strong as race, was the fact that he spoke like an educated and thoughtful person. That fed on the right’s anti-education as elite stance and helped paint him as an uppity-you-know-what.
