Nonetheless, he has new responsibilities and I assume he’s smart and can read people. I can’t imagine anyone smart can’t see Trump in all his ungloriousness. Given the unsmart people around him, perhaps he’ll take thought for his children and other younger people he might care about.

He has every reason to know what Putin is really like, and his new position doesn’t require him to suck up to him.
