Symbolism involving birds interacting with humans is particularly powerful and goes back thousands of years in human history.

The fact that both of the above comments reference religious meanings, is an indication of this. But regardless of where one resides on the spectrum of religion and atheism, one can't help but be moved by what happened.

In our increasingly crass and inhumane politics, Bernie is our Jewish Saint Francis of Assisi (the patron saint of animals & the environment). And in more ways than just this one.

Francis’ devotion was expressed through his love for all of God's creation, as he cared for the poor and sick, preached sermons to animals, and praised ALL creatures as brothers and sisters under God. His beliefs and works are summarized in the prayer below. Even if you’re a different religion, or no religion at all, it’s worth reading, and taking to heart:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury,pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

to be consoled as to console;

to be understood as to understand;

to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen
