Yeah, Timo, the Linux version is too old. But, if you use the version 3 beta through Wine, they work pretty well together, and for the moment it is free. I've noticed a few rough spots, mainly with more complicated screen layouts, but in general it seems to get it all right. I stick to compiling on the Mac, as for what I use, the Windows version seems a bit weaker (LaTeX stuff). Honestly, compiling my Scrivener projects is about all I use a Mac for these days!

I have tried running Scrivener in Wine, but when I try to access a test project created in Ubuntu 18.04 Wine from my Mac (via my Nextcloud), I get a warning saying that the project was created with an older version of Scrivener, and whether I'd like to update the project. If I click yes on that, I'm pretty sure I won't then be able to continue editing from my Linux computer anymore.

My desktop is a Mac and my laptop is Ubuntu, and I'm trying to see if it's possible to access and work on the same Scrivener project from both machines. I'm starting to think it is not possible.

Also suffered some corruption of files with Scriv on Linux. Found a (relatively) new project, Manuskript, that follows the Scriv layout and adds the "missing" Character and Plot storylines at the bottom of the screen.
When I experimented with Linux -- and the Linux version of Scrivener -- a few years ago, it led to corruption of some Scrivener projects that had come from my Mac. Thus I would be very wary of trying to use the old, abandoned Linux release now.

As I contemplate possibly migrating from Mac to Ubuntu MATE, it seems like my best Scrivener option would be to get the Windows version and run it in WINE. I mean, this is the sort of situation WINE was invented for, right?

Also, I haven't found any really direct competitor to Scrivener on any platform, which is frustrating and a bit puzzling.

I'v just installed Scrivener on my office laptop (running Ubuntu) and it is working nice. The only twerk is that Scrivener needs an old lib (libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-0) to run properly but it was easy to find (https://www.ubuntuupdates.org/package/core/xenial/universe/base/libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-0) and to install.

I recommend Scrivener above all anytime. :)

Okay. It was on disk but it didn't run and then I couldn't find it... that's my silliness. Good news is there is a new version out, without an expiration date. And it is still free for Linux. Couldn't ask for more. Because it is a great piece of software.
Here is the link for anyone as bad about finding stuff out as me:

Was intrigued by "This fantastic and amazing book was compiled in Scrivener directly into ebook format." but clicking the hyperlink just got me a 404 message on amazon.com, and I'm left wondering what the book is??

[The book is being re-edited and republished some time over the next few weeks. The name will be "Search for Sungudogo" -gtl]
