They were right in asking it to be done off campus and MLC does not control the theatre but it was being directed by a student and our facilities were being used.

We have the right to practice our religion and also to choose what message we are portraying by our extracurricular activities. This is a great school that has some of the most faithful students.

After seeing the poster for the audition, several MLC professors raised objections about the play’s subject to the administration.

Jeffrey Schone, MLC’s VP of Student Life, declined to name the objecting professors, but stated the administration similarly became concerned about being associated with the play.

“We felt it was not compatible with what [the school] teaches the Bible says about the universe and the world,” said Schone. “This is a ministerial school. People employing our students need confidence about their views.”

And insulating them from alternative views will bolster that confidence? I’d sooner suspect the reverse. Quick quiz. Who said this?

It was a Jesuit, the late Fr. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. MLC should take heed of his words.

It would be interesting to know the contents of these emails. It’s highly likely these would contain a mixture of obscenities, actual threats and comments expressing strong opinions based upon bigotry alloyed with extreme ignorance.
