But betamax was a standard that could only be used with royalties paid to Sony(same as Bluray).. Why pay more to produce the better technology when you can use some almost as good for much cheaper..

Yes, beta was better technology. It was a smaller cartridge, and it did not pull the tape out and wrap it around the drive wheels, so there was far less damage to the tapes Every professsional organisation such as tv studios used beta.
